A D.C. Law Firm is seeking a Legislative Practice Assistant. The Legislative Practice Assistant will assist the Legislative Attorneys and Legislative staff members. Duties include utilizing technology to analyze case-related facts and organize data, conducting research, preparing and organizing exhibits, assisting in editing and formatting documents in Microsoft Office Suite and other applicable software applications, and assisting with other tasks as assigned. Standard duties include editing and finalizing documents, interacting with clients, coordinating attorney's calendars, time entry, billing, and preparation of expense reports for reimbursement and managing case files, including opening and closing client matters. The role is 37.50 hours/week and the candidate should also be flexible to work overtime as needed.

This is 4 days in office, 1 day remote and they offer competitive benefits. This is a great opportunity for recent grads with a GPA of 3.6 or higher


Status: Direct Hire

Salary: 55k-60K DOE

What You'll Do:

  • Draft routine correspondence and compile data and documents.
  • Citation assistance and research support.
  • Perform data and factual analysis for the Firm’s Legislative Practice.
  • Coordinate the document management, document production, and certain electronic databases for the Firm’s Legislative Practice.
  • Prepare conflict checks on potential clients.
  • Prepare responses to RFPs and audit inquiry requests for attorney review.
  • Maintain and retrieve case files and case related documents.
  • Organize due diligence reviews and classify documents per attorney directions.
  • Ensure proper indexing and filing of legal documents.
  • Structure, format and proofread documents, including invoices, contracts, proposals and large agreements with tables of contents and section-specific cross-references.
  • Edit and finalize documents.
  • Prepare timely and accurate expense reports for reimbursement to attorneys and supervisors.
  • Create and maintain filing systems and databases to ensure accurate and efficient retrieval of data.
  • Perform research on topics as directed by the Firm’s Legislative Practice.
  • Prepare engagement letters.
  • Prepare and submit new client matters.
  • Manage lists of client projects.
  • Send project and scheduling reminders to both clients and attorneys.
  • Monitor attorney availability for potential assistance on current and proposed projects.
  • Schedule invoice reminders with clients regarding sending and paying invoices.
  • Transcribe legal documents and time entry.
  • Proofread documents to ensure accuracy of formatting, grammar and punctuation.
  • Maintain superior client relations over the telephone and in person.
  • Maintain calendar of meetings, calls, business trips and upcoming events.
  • Coordinate conferences, meetings, appointments and preparation of materials for same.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements by securing air, hotel and car reservations.
  • Coordinate input and compilation of attorney time.
  • Coordinate, attend, and take notes at team meetings.
  • Prepare client billings.
  • Maintain and update the docketing calendar and circulate per firm policy.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Must be able to work independently or in a collaborative environment and be accountable for his/her workload, work accurately under deadlines, pay attention to details, and be able to manage multiple assignments and prioritize deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to synthesize complex or diverse information and collect and research data. When applicable, must effectively present information and respond to follow up questions and assignments from attorneys.
  • Must have a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Must be willing and able to learn new technologies and software applications with minimal guidance. Must have functional knowledge of the internet and browsers. Experience with legal research sites such as Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw welcomed but not required.
