BASF/Chemetall, is the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, operating under the Chemetall brand, and a leading supplier of applied surface treatments worldwide.


At BASF/Chemetall, we develop and manufacture tailor-made technology and system solutions for applied surface technology. Our products protect metals from corrosion, facilitate forming and treatment, prepare parts optimally for the painting process and ensure excellent coating adhesion. Our technologies and products are used in a variety of industries and end markets such as automotive, aerospace, aluminum finishing and metal forming.


The chemical treatment of metal surfaces is BASF/Chemetall core competence. The focus of our worldwide activities is on the development and implementation of customized technology and system solutions for surface treatment.



Where the Chemistry Happens:


The Regional Head of Surface Treatment Technology position will be responsible to develop, implement, sustain, and lead Technology and Innovation strategies, process, and standards for BASF | Chemetall North America region comprising of US, Canada, and Mexico.


The position will be based in New Providence, NJ and reports to the Regional Vice President and Head of Global Technology.



Formula for Success


  • Operational leadership of Technology Labs & Platforms, Technical Customer & Field Support, and Lab Service Hubs in region North America.
  • Operational leadership responsibilities will include 40+ (direct and indirect) in multiple locations in the US and Mexico.
  • Accountable & responsible for the North America Technology Strategy.
  • Support business needs and influence business strategies by providing up-to-date information on technology developments that may provide significant impact product lines and customers.
  • Work with BASF | Chemetall Group companies to develop and recommend long term product development strategies, policies, standards, guidelines, processes, and best practices specific to the businesses of North America.
  • Ensure compliance with all SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) regulations, Quality, and ISO certifications for all regional operating sites.
  • Play a crucial role in supporting marketing & sales objectives through the effective research, design, development and delivery of products and process solutions to meet customers' needs.
  • Ensure overall efficiency & effectiveness of laboratory activities, processes, and safety standards in alignment with Global Technology.
  • Participate in the global R&D project pipeline development and product recipe transfer.
  • Manage HR, Invest and other operating expenses budgets for dependent lab(s) in alignment with regional Vice President and Controlling.
  • Compile and manage regional Technology budget and projects portfolio in alignment with Global Technology Head and regional Vice President.
  • Ensures know-how retention within North America and foster exchange with the other regions.
  • Leverage BASF Corporate R&D and Technology Units to develop new s Lead regional Development and Customization labs, Technology Platform resources and Technical Customer Support.
  • Member of the G-ECT/N senior leadership team and applicable responsibilities that correspond to this role.
  • All other duties as assigned.




Ingredients for Success


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering or Chemistry required; Masters or PHD is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience in developing, implementing, and sustaining a leadership position in technology matters, preferably in surface treatment and/or coatings.
  • Strong leadership experience preferred with multidisciplinary teams and diverse teams (virtually and in person).
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of management down to the first line employee and across cultural boundaries.
  • Strong analytical/computer skills along with strong leadership skills.
  • Travel for this position is 25%, domestic and international.
  • Valid Drivers License in good standing; positions offers a company car.
