Crew Carbon Overview

We are a venture-backed, early-stage company developed at Yale University, commercializing research conducted by Prof. Noah Planavsky and Dr. Joachim Katchinoff to utilize key biogeochemical reactions to make positive climate impact while making wastewater treatment more effective. We use our patented technology to enhance the natural power of minerals to help treat wastewater and store carbon dioxide permanently using a low-cost solution combined with best-in-class monitoring and modeling for the robust quantification of CO2 removed. Our approach can provide millions of dollars in chemical cost savings, new revenue streams, and significant climate impact to the wastewater sector. CREW is currently deployed in the US and Germany, with new projects launching across the world.

We are funded by Counteract, ReGen, Ponderosa, Connecticut Innovations and others. We've secured large contracts with the premier buyers of carbon credits through the Frontier Climate Fund (Stripe, Shopify, Autodesk, McKinsey, among others) and have been selected by the Department of Energy as one of the few potential suppliers of high-quality carbon credits to the federal government.

About the Role

The Head of Science at CREW Carbon will be pivotal in driving the scientific strategy and execution of MRV for our carbon removal technology. They will be responsible for addressing key scientific questions, managing and building a high-performing research and development team, and establishing a robust measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) product. They will work to understand and characterize mineral dissolution kinetics and geochemical mechanisms, as well as translate concepts into metrics for process, hardware, and MRV development. This role requires a deep understanding of geochemistry, biogeochemistry, mineral kinetics, inorganic chemistry, and computational modeling. The Head of Science will ensure the scientific integrity and success of CREW's technology through rigorous experimentation, protocol development, and team leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and plan the methods development roadmap for new and existing field-deployed monitoring systems.
  • Design and conduct sampling and experimental campaigns at lab and field scales to determine the rate and scale of CO2 removal, greenhouse gas attenuation, and impacts on wastewater treatment processes.
  • Establish a vetted protocol for CREW’s CO2 removal approach with the support of the broader CREW team.
  • Lead, build, and manage the R&D team to advance scientific development and technological success.
  • Prioritize and oversee scientific projects to ensure consistent progress toward carbon removal milestones.
  • Design experiments to answer key questions in CREW’s technology development and carbon removal analyses.
  • Provide scientific direction and feedback to the R&D team to ensure rigorous and reliable results.
  • Foster a collaborative and developmental environment within the R&D team.
  • Coordinate with the Head of Operations to ensure rigorous data capture, results reporting, and system adoption for team communication and learning.
  • Define and comply with technical standards, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and equipment maintenance.
  • Collaborate with research and engineering teams to integrate geochemical models into CREW’s technology platform.
  • Analyze and interpret empirical and model results to inform strategic decision-making and technology development.

Required Skills & Experience

  • PhD in geochemistry, biogeochemistry, or a related field.
  • Proven management experience in building and leading a research team.
  • Extensive experience in both field and laboratory work.
  • Strong background in mineral kinetics, inorganic chemistry, and biogeochemistry.
  • At minimum 5 years of laboratory experience.
  • Skills in data management and coding.
  • Familiarity with hydrological and oceanographic modeling techniques and programs, such as ROMs, cGENIE, Geochemist’s Workbench, and PHREEQC.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Adaptable, creative, and execution-focused startup mindset.
  • Strong commitment to fighting climate change.

Location

CREW has offices and labs in New Haven, CT and offices in Brooklyn, NY. The ideal candidate will be in-person, though there is an option available for remote/hybrid work as needed.

Why Work At Crew Carbon?

  • According to recent research, the global water and wastewater treatment market size was valued at $323+ billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $617+ billion by 2032; North America dominated the water and wastewater treatment market with a market share of 38.67% in 2023.
  • According to McKinsey & Company, the carbon removal (CDR) market could become a trillion-dollar industry, potentially reaching up to $1.2 trillion by 2050, highlighting the significant economic opportunities within this emerging sector.
  • We utilize the extensive infrastructure present in wastewater treatment systems to provide robust, empirical, and durable carbon dioxide removal through enhanced weathering, while delivering process benefits to our partners; our process was patented while at Yale University, with patents granted by the US Patent Office and global filings already in place.
  • We have assembled a team of experts in climate and wastewater, and we are supported by expert partners (Pacific Northwest National Labs, Department of Energy, Carbon to Sea Initiative, Yale University)
  • We have completed a successful pilot and have built many thousands of tons of CDR capacity, with several new deployments coming online in Q32024

Highlights

  • CREW has won a large carbon credit contract with the premier buyer of carbon credits, the Frontier Climate Fund in Winter 2022
  • CREW was selected as 1 of 24 companies by the US Department of Energy in 2024 to be a potential supplier of high-quality carbon credits to the federal government, who could be one of CREW's largest carbon credit buyers.
  • CREW was highlighted as an “Innovation of the Month” by United States Senator, Chris Murphy.
  • CREW was selected by ImagineH2O, the leading water sector innovation accelerator.
  • CREW was highlighted by Business Insider as “One of the Most Promising Climate-Tech Startups of 2023.”
