The Commodity Controls Risk Analyst III is responsible for day-to-day middle office risk management and control activities, including regular risk analysis and stakeholder reporting, Sarbanes-Oxley and IT Governance controls, and is the super-user for Allegro Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) software and associated market data services. This role is responsible for regular risk analysis and stakeholder reporting; for assuring market and credit risk exposure and transaction activities are within risk and controls policies, procedures, guidelines, and limits, and that any alerts and encumbrances are documented and addressed. This role requires experience with Allegro ETRM, or similar software, market price data vendors, transaction valuation, and business intelligence; as well as a working understanding of physical energy supply, financial derivatives, options and basis contracts, and market price indices. Sound cross-functional stakeholder and executive-level verbal and written communication is required.



Key Responsibilities

  • Brings and develops a hands-on working understanding of ETRM systems and how they support the fuels supply and hedging lifecycle; maintain segregation of duties for transaction controls, risk analysis, and reporting
  • Analyzes market and counterparty credit risk for risk exposures to help the Utility better manage Fuels risk
  • Reviews and consolidates independent mark-to-market valuations of commodity transactions and physical and financial hedging and supply instruments and researches anomalies in valuation; ensures accurate mark-to-market valuations of commodity transactions
  • Supports Risk Management across the risk organization, including regulatory documentation and data gathering requests for risk control, regulated fuel audit, and other internal and external audits
  • Accountable for monitoring transaction and portfolio-level exposure to limits and guidelines; assuring all transaction controls are comprehensive, complete, and auditable, and adequate documentation of breach of policies and procedures and supporting remediation plans
  • Performs transaction validation of risk attributes, embedded optionality, and appropriate composite pricing; communicate and support reconciliation of credit exposure, margin calls, and collateral requirements and ensure they are adequately captured in the Allegro ETRM system of record
  • Validates market prices automatically interfaced from market data sources and manually imports market prices (as needed) to ensure the integrity of valuation and risk analysis daily and as requested
  • Liaises with front office to review transaction bookings and compliance with delegation of authority, hedging guidelines, and to reconcile differences in valuation, missing trades, etc.; interacts with back office to support commodity transaction confirmation, settlements, pricing, or other related issues
  • Regularly produces risk and financial reports, commodity transaction, portfolio, and credit exposure reports, hedge effectiveness testing, performance analysis, management dashboards, and data exhibits to communicate risk exposures, risk attributions, and change rationalization for business and executive stakeholders
  • Responsible for month-end and quarterly derivatives valuation close, mark-to-market and value at risk exposure, financial statement review, and supports executive SOX attestations for financial reporting
  • Supports drafting risk controls, policies and procedures, risk management committee and executive management presentations in Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint; and maintains adequate documentation and data retention
  • Responds timely to regulatory, financial audit, and ITGC data requests
  • Develops relationships to be an effective business partner or subject matter professional to support Cleco’s risk management objectives
  • Actively engages in process improvement initiatives to enhance Risk Management service delivery and processes; identifies automation areas to reduce routine manual tasks
  • Helps lead efforts for continuous improvement of risk lifecycle analytics, software, and business intelligence tools; participates in the integration of current systems (e.g., SAP) and analytical techniques to enhance/streamline current operations
  • Champions a corporate culture that emphasizes risk decision-making, transparency, integrity, safety, environmental responsibility, employee development, diversity and inclusion, customer service, and operational excellence


Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Finance, Business, Analytics, or related field
  • 5-7+ years of related experience in Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems/supporting technologies for commodity transaction management, specifically in Power and Utilities sector
  • Experience with Allegro ETRM system
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel required, working knowledge of VBA, C++, SQL, Python, R & Business Intelligence Software preferred
  • Knowledge of gas, coal, electric, and renewable energy credit transactions and MISO power market preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, and project management skills
  • Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job
  • Ability to exercise judgment with little direction/guidance but also knows when to escalate to the Manager, Risk Management and Controls
  • Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, presenting ideas and opinions in a respectful and collegial manner
  • Step progression levels based on skill proficiency and scope of job
