The Commodity Risk Analyst is tasked with overseeing daily risk management and control functions within the middle office. This includes conducting regular risk assessments, preparing stakeholder reports, and ensuring compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and IT Governance standards. The analyst will also serve as the primary expert for Allegro Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) software and related market data services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of ETRM systems and their role in the fuel supply and hedging processes, ensuring proper segregation of duties for transaction controls, risk assessment, and reporting.
- Evaluate market and counterparty credit risks to assist the Utility in managing fuel-related risks effectively.
- Consolidate independent mark-to-market assessments of commodity transactions and investigate any discrepancies in valuations, ensuring accuracy in reporting.
- Support the Risk Management team with regulatory documentation and data collection for audits and compliance checks.
- Monitor transaction and portfolio exposure against established limits and guidelines, ensuring thorough documentation of any policy breaches and corresponding remediation plans.
- Validate risk attributes and pricing for transactions, ensuring accurate capture of credit exposure, margin calls, and collateral requirements in the Allegro ETRM system.
- Ensure the integrity of market price data through regular validation and manual imports as necessary.
- Collaborate with front office teams to ensure compliance with transaction bookings and resolve any discrepancies in valuations.
- Generate regular risk and financial reports, including commodity transaction summaries, portfolio analyses, and management dashboards to communicate risk exposures to stakeholders.
- Oversee month-end and quarterly derivatives valuation processes, including mark-to-market assessments and financial statement reviews.
- Assist in drafting risk management policies and procedures, as well as preparing presentations for management and committees.
- Respond promptly to requests from regulatory bodies and financial audits.
- Foster relationships to become a trusted business partner in achieving Cleco's risk management objectives.
- Engage in initiatives aimed at improving risk management processes and identifying automation opportunities to enhance efficiency.
- Lead efforts to continuously improve risk lifecycle analytics and business intelligence tools, integrating current systems to streamline operations.
- Promote a corporate culture that values risk-informed decision-making, transparency, integrity, and operational excellence.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Business, Analytics, or a related discipline.
- 5-7+ years of relevant experience in Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems, particularly within the Power and Utilities sector.
- Proficiency with Allegro ETRM software.
- Strong skills in MS Excel; familiarity with VBA, C++, SQL, Python, R, and Business Intelligence tools is preferred.
- Knowledge of gas, coal, electric, and renewable energy credit transactions is advantageous.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management capabilities.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving business needs.
- Ability to work independently while knowing when to escalate issues to management.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, within a team environment.
Licenses and Certifications:
CFA, FRM, and other relevant risk management certifications are beneficial.
