Senior Research Associate – Drug Discovery

About the Position:

The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB) has expanded its presence

into the Boston area and is seeking a Senior Research Associate to join our growing

team of scientists. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on wet lab

experience while contributing to both drug discovery and basic research projects. The

ideal candidate will have expertise in protein science and biochemistry and a passion

for advancing scientific discoveries.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Support:

Under the guidance of the Head of Drug Discovery, you will independently design

and execute experiments to support a range of research projects. You’ll also

analyze experimental data and present your findings to both internal teams and

external collaborators.

  • Collaborative Research:

Work closely with interdisciplinary teams to drive biological discoveries. You will

play a key role in advancing our drug discovery efforts and contributing to cutting-

edge basic research projects.

  • Method Development:

Utilize your expertise in protein science, molecular biology, biochemistry, and

structural biology to develop and optimize experimental protocols to support

structural biology, biochemical, and biophysical assays.


Required Qualifications:

Educational Background:

Master’s degree in biochemistry or a related field with 0-2 years of experience, or

a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience.


Laboratory Skills:

Strong interest and aptitude for hands-on laboratory work, with a focus on protein

science, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

  • Team Collaboration:

Highly motivated, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as

part of a team.

  • Technical Expertise (or Willingness to Learn):

o Protein Science: Protein expression and purification, enzymatic activity

assays, biochemical interaction assays, biophysical assays, and structural

biology techniques.

o Small Molecule Drug Discovery: Biochemical assay development,

compound screening, and data analysis.

o Molecular Biology: Recombinant DNA cloning, mutagenesis, PCR, and

techniques like Gibson assembly.

o Software Proficiency: High proficiency with AlphaFold, ChimeraX (or

equivalent), Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, and Slack.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expression Systems:

Hands-on experience with protein expression utilizing bacterial, mammalian, and

insect cell systems as well as purification using AKTA FPLC.

  • Industry Experience:

Prior experience in a drug discovery setting, particularly in laboratory-based

roles.

  • Passion for Science:

A genuine enthusiasm for using cutting-edge tools and technologies and an

innate ability to geek out on science.
