Job Duties


The Virginia Department of Education seeks an Assessment Specialist to provide support and complex expertise to school division personnel regarding the administration of the Virginia Assessment Program.

The selected incumbent will work independently or collaboratively with other assessment or contractor staff, as appropriate, to accomplish varied tasks and assignments in of the program.


Specific duties include:

  • Providing technical support and training on aspects of state test administration via telephone, email, and web conferencing
  • Assigning test irregularities in the TIWAS application to assessment staff and resolving test irregularities
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on all contractor provided documentation
  • Participating in writing and reviewing VDOE-generated written correspondence regarding test administration
  • Assisting in editing, rewriting, and verifying the accuracy of contractor's knowledge-based articles and response documents
  • Maintaining the Division Director of Testing (DDOT) Page ensuring resources and information are current and up to date
  • Assist in the investigation of alleged test security violations
  • Assisting in responding to assessment related FOIA requests and approved information requests from various departments within the agency
  • Participating in the weekly team meetings with assessment staff and contractor staff
  • Manages the Office of Student Assessment webpages on the VDOE website as well as participate on other technology teams/committees
  • Participate and assist in additional projects as requested by the director and assistant superintendent
Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of the field of K-12 education and state and federal education regulations
  • Knowledge of procedures for both paper/pencil and Web-based assessments
  • Considerable knowledge of large-scale assessment practices, including test administration procedures
  • Working knowledge of technology and data as related to K-12 education, including hardware and software, infrastructure, data and data systems
  • Considerable knowledge and skills in using various software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, PDF mark-up, etc.) and Web-based applications (test administration applications, VDOE software applications, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to the educational community, contractors, and the public regarding highly complex assessment program information.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex assignments with significant attention to details, accuracy, and timeliness
  • Ability to evaluate impact of changes to current regulations and technical specifications on statewide delivery systems:
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret policies and guidelines, and provide technical assistance to local school divisions.

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Advanced degree
  • Experience with web-based systems and the administration of large scale assessments
  • Experience with alternate assessments for students with disabilities
