About the Position:

As the Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel at Point Park University, you will serve as the principal legal officer, offering legal advice and services to various university stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees and senior leadership.


This role requires overseeing legal matters like compliance, litigation, policy development, and contractual agreements to ensure the university operates within the law and aligns with its mission and objectives.


Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 10 years of legal experience with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably in higher education or public sector settings.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the bar, licensed, and eligible to practice law in Pennsylvania.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a university or public institution.
  • Familiarity with academic governance, research compliance, and intellectual property law.
  • Experience handling crisis management and emergency response legal issues.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in higher education law encompassing compliance, governance, and employment.

Key Responsibilities:
Legal Strategy & Compliance:
  • Develop and execute legal strategies that bolster the university's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Provide legal input on strategic planning, risk management, and institutional policy.

Litigation & Dispute Resolution:

  • Supervise all university-related litigation, including coordination with external legal advisors.
  • Represent the university in legal proceedings when necessary.
  • Resolve disputes to minimize risk and liability.

Contracts & Agreements:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate various contracts and agreements, covering research, partnerships, employment, and real estate.
  • Ensure contract compliance with university policies and relevant laws.

Policy Development:

  • Create and update university policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and best practices alignment.
  • Offer training and guidance on policies and legal matters to university stakeholders.

Governance & Compliance:

  • Advise the Board of Trustees and university leadership on governance issues, including bylaws and corporate structure.
  • Guarantee compliance with higher education regulations and accreditation requirements.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and evaluate legal risks for the university.
  • Devise strategies to mitigate risks, including effective compliance and risk management programs.
  • Legal Counsel & Advisory:
  • Provide legal counsel on diverse matters such as academic affairs, employment, intellectual property, and student concerns.
  • Act as a resource for interpreting laws, regulations, and university policies.

Leadership & Management:

  • Lead the Office of the General Counsel, overseeing legal staff, budget management, and external legal counsel supervision.
  • Cultivate a collaborative and supportive work environment promoting professional development and excellence.
