Position is assigned to the boiler plants on the Dorothea Dix and Governor Morehead School Campus. Perform maintenance tasks to keep boilers operating continuously (24 hrs. daily) to provide steam for heating, cooking, and hot water using natural gas and #2 fuel oil. Analyze boiler water and feed water to maintain proper water treatment chemistry. Maintain accurate plant operating logs and water treatment records. Prepare boilers and equipment for annual inspection; repair plant systems and equipment to maintain efficiency.

The position will perform a variety of skilled trade tasks associated with the repair and maintenance of plumbing systems; water and sewer main services steam distribution system; hot water distribution system; and all other specialized systems or equipment that exist on the both campuses.

This position is an essential position which is required to report during adverse weather and required to work weekends and holiday and may be assigned to any shift to meet operational needs of the plants.

About the DHHS Office of Property & Construction:


The Division of Property and Construction provides maintenance, housekeeping, and grounds services for the Dorothea Dix Campus which consists of 35 buildings totally 944,700 square feet of building space on 326 acres and provides basic maintenance and grounds services for the Governor Morehead School which has 31 buildings totaling 291,000 square feet of building space.

  • Demonstrated experience with general maintenance repairs such as plumbing/piping repairs, replacing light bulbs, monitoring boilers and related equipment.

  • Documented experience with maintenance and operations manuals.
  • Demonstrated experience to maintaining written records and logs of plant operations.
  • Ability to work all shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions including hot, cold, wet and steam environments.
  • Ability to work in tight confined spaces including steam tunnels and manholes.

Physical Requirements:
HEAVY WORK - Exerting up to l00 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Some work will be performed outside during all types of weather conditions.
