Job Summary

This is a highly skilled position that requires proficiency in the maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, cooling, steam/hot water boilers, and boiler auxiliary equipment. The successful candidate will have expertise in electrical, plumbing, and general building maintenance within the maintenance service zone.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and associated equipment/fixtures, including cutting thread, assembling, and installing pipe, connecting valves, caulking joints, and testing jobs.
  • Perform journey-level work up to 600 vac in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of secondary electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures, including conduit wire, electrical panels, breakers, switch gear, magnetic starters, disconnects, motors, light fixtures, ballasts, switches, receptacles, and control system faults.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, fan turbines, pumps, condensate receivers, steam lines, expansion joints, strainers, pressure reducing stations, piping, insulation, air compressors, water softeners, and other equipment for generating and controlling steam.
  • Participate in quarterly on-call programs, carrying a pager for one week at a time, and be available to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor and demonstrate a depth of knowledge and skills for pneumatic controls and DDC-type controls.
  • Communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
Requirements
  • Lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.

This position has been designated as essential personnel for NC State University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
