As a Facilities Maintenance Repairer I, you will repair, replace, and construct items for carpentry, roofing, upholstery, and other Airport building maintenance projects. As knowledge, experience, and skills increase, more complex and varied responsibilities may be assigned.

Facilities Maintenance Repairer I

This is a developmental level job and may lead to the next rung of the Facilities Maintenance Repairer career ladder (Repairer II).

After 12 months of successful performance and demonstrable structural repair skill progression, a one grade increase is awarded non-competitively and the incumbent moves to the next rung of the career ladder (TSMPREP2).

Serves in the Structures and Grounds Division of the Airport Maintenance Department at either Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport, or at the Dulles Toll Road in McLean, VA.

Repairs, installs, and constructs items for serviceability. Assists higher grade Maintenance Mechanics in carpentry, roofing, and related building maintenance projects by measuring, cutting, and placing materials. Performs on-the-job training assignments. Complies with requirements in work orders, building codes, and safety regulations. Performs related functions

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Takes on more independent responsibility in construction and repair of items.

Performs monthly preventive maintenance inspections of all airport structures. Independently identifies and repairs trip hazards.

Locates leaks, repairs or removes damaged area, and applies coatings over roof surfaces.

Assists with development and installation of new construction; wall layouts/partitions for office renovations, construction walls for projects, acoustical ceilings, doors and hardware.

Removes and replaces gravel, metal flashing, gutters, downspouts, and chimneys. Installs shingles over felt paper and plywood. Repairs expansion joints.

[At IAD] Participates with Upholsterer in drawing and cutting patterns and putting together seats.

[At IAD] Assists in remounting bumpers on Mobile Lounges and buildings.

Fabricates parts from wood and metal to ensure areas are serviceable until new parts can be ordered and installed.

Constructs forms in curved and straight lines for concrete sidewalks. Inserts reinforcement steel or wire. Pours, levels, and smooths concrete to desired finish. Repairs and upgrades storm drains.

Constructs and repairs retaining walls and similar structures made of brick and related materials. Adjusts or aligns doors.

Constructs interior/exterior walls using metal and wood studs, drywall, and or appropriate sub siding and finish siding.

Lays out and installs various types of suspended acoustical ceilings.

Measures and installs traffic signs, using post-hole digger or auger.

Repairs or replaces guard rails, crossover chains, cables, and posts on highways.

Paints or stains wood with brushes or spray equipment.

Inspects, repairs, or replaces bulletin boards, glass-panels, damaged ceiling, broken floor and wall tiles, and interior signs of various materials. Assembles furniture kits.

[At DTR] Assists in electrical, plumbing and HVAC repairs and maintenance

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of industrial and office structures.

Knowledge of carpentry and related building trades and ability to independently construct or repair furniture and structures, and lay floor and ceiling tiles and carpet squares.

Ability to perform on-the-job training assignments typical of a full-performance Maintenance Mechanic.

Knowledge of and ability to assist with roofing work.

Knowledge of and ability to assist with upholstery work.

Knowledge of and ability to assist with asphalt, masonry, and concrete work.

Knowledge of and ability to select the proper materials used in the building trades.

Skill in using hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, wrenches, meters, hammers).

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.

Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer, computerized work order and time and attendance systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL). [Not required for DTR]

Experience with large-scale snow removal utilizing large, Class B commercial vehicles.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

[DCA and IAD only] Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL) within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement in the job.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).

Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 100 pounds). May bend, stoop, crouch, and work in a cramped position.

May be subject to potential hazards common to the airport environment and construction industry. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
