The Controller's Office is responsible for AARP's enterprise-wide accounting activities. This includes maintaining internal controls; compliance with federal, state, and other legal reporting requirements; grants management; revenue recognition; general ledger activity; accounts payable/receivable; payroll; tax; and procurement functions to include managing strategic outsourcing, contract negotiation and supplier management.

The Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and compliance of the organization's financial data with established accounting standards. This role involves producing timely financial reports for stakeholders, processing accounting entries for various transactions, and conducting reviews and audits to verify the correctness of financial statements.

The Accountant also supports the month-end close process, reconciles general ledger accounts, maintains GAAP-compliant account balances, and oversees lease transactions to ensure adherence to lease accounting standards.

In addition to monitoring ongoing business, the Accountant addresses internal inquiries, resolves financial discrepancies, and assists with the lease forecasting process. A comprehensive understanding of business operations is required to identify and address any issues affecting financial reporting.

The Accountant actively evaluates and recommends enhancements to accounting policies, procedures, systems, and supports the implementation of identified improvements. This role includes monitoring grants and financial projects, supporting monthly reporting, and preparing audit schedules for the interim and annual external audit.

The Accountant also supports the monthly financial reporting for department(s) and/or for AARP consolidated.

Responsibilities

Processes and prepares accounting entries. Reviews and audits financial statements and reports ensuring all calculations and data entries are correct. Reconciles general ledger accounts, identifying any discrepancies and errors. Follows-up on pending business and responds to requests. Responds to inquiries from internal clients and researches and resolves concerns or discrepancies. Serves as liaison with internal clients to gather and distribute financial information and ensures that clients understand financial policies and the importance of compliance therewith.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field ideally in an Accounting or Finance related discipline and 5+ years of related experience is required. Familiarity with GAAP to ensure compliance with accounting standards. Proficiency in creating and posting journal entries during the month-end close process. Understanding and handling accruals for accurate financial reporting. Ability to compile financial statements from general ledger data. Collaborating with external auditors during annual audits. Maintaining a clear audit trail for transactions. Strong analytical abilities aid in reviewing financial data and addressing discrepancies.
Preferred:
CPA designation is preferred.

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
