As Director, you will be expected to independently drive initiatives and strategies, harnessing a comprehensive understanding of the RNA and delivery technology landscapes. You will need to be proactive in identifying emerging trends and technologies that can enhance Moderna's competitive edge and operational excellence. Your role will involve synthesizing complex scientific knowledge and landscape insights into strategic plans that foster robust internal collaboration while effectively managing relationships with external partners. The focus of various initiatives will encompass nucleic acid innovations and chemistries, delivery systems, process and manufacturing enhancement and optimization, and gene editing tools.

Heres What Youll Do:

Proactive Leadership: Exhibit a high degree of initiative and drive in identifying and pursuing new technological opportunities, fostering an environment of innovation and forward-thinking.

Strategic Influence: Engage regularly with senior internal leaders to guide the companys technology strategy, ensuring alignment with broader business objectives.

Collaborative Integration: Maintain strong collaborative ties with key internal experts, facilitating a seamless flow of information and strategies between R&D, IP/legal, and business development teams and external entities.

External Leadership: Represent Moderna in scientific deep-dives and due diligences, and discussions with external entities, establishing yourself as a key spokesperson in the scientific and business communities.

Landscape and Technology Mastery: Continuously update and maintain expert knowledge of the competitive landscape and technology trends in RNA and LNP fields, translating these into actionable strategic initiatives.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

PhD in life sciences field with 8+ years of relevant experience in industry setting. 4+ years of direct experience with mRNA technology innovation preferred.

Proven track record in the following areas:

Cross-Functional Leadership: Demonstrated expertise in driving cross-functional projects that frequently span the executive team, business development, contracts, intellectual property, and R&D functions.

External Innovation: Established and developed an external innovation team and strategy, including founding and developing a search and evaluation function for competitive intelligence, collaboration, and in-licensing. This includes a broad range of technologies such as gene editing platforms, transient and epigenetic cell modifications, cell therapy engineering, nucleic acid biology and manufacturing, and viral and non-viral nucleic acid delivery systems.

Deal Execution: Successfully executed and managed multiple collaboration, option, and license agreements in conjunction with legal and business development teams.

Strong alignment with Modernas mindset, demonstrating a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in the biotechnology field.

Ability to exhibit a proactive approach to problem-solving and a passion for driving positive change in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Exceptional communication skills. Ability to explain complex topics, nuances, risks and tradeoffs in a clear, simple manner to senior management
