URI is the oldest licensed provider of domestic violence (DV) shelter and services in New York State, and is the largest provider in the United States of DV shelter services, as well as a leading provider of shelter and services for homeless families. POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Development - Institutional Giving, the Grant Writer is responsible for developing funding proposals including government proposals, foundation grant requests, and corporate funding requests. The Grant Writer will work closely with the Director of Development to craft funding requests that align with URI's highest areas of need with an emphasis on URI's non-residential programs and capital requests. They will also carefully review RFPs and funding guidelines, summarize opportunities for internal consideration, and assemble supporting documents needed for a successful submission. They will work with program staff and program leadership to develop compelling and accurate content, while also aligning with donor interests.

Salary: $65,000 to $75,000

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Government Grants
  • Research and identify government grant opportunities aligned with organizational goals and capital needs. Opportunities will be considered at all levels of government including Federal, State, City, and Borough.
  • Works across the organization to ensure that content is gathered for grant applications. Collaborate with all departments, including Programs, Finance, Government Affairs (GA), and Operations.
  • Vet and summarize government grant opportunities as assigned by Director. Make recommendations to the Director on opportunity fit.
  • Responsible for tracking government grant reporting deadlines, contract/award performance period, and individual(s) responsible for reporting and submission. Provides reminders in advance of reporting date to responsible parties for timely completion of report.
  • Assembles supporting documents as directed.
Corporations and Foundations
  • Develops, writes, and assembles proposals and reports to corporations and foundations.
  • Conducts prospecting of corporations and foundations. Prospecting to align with areas of core needs, as determined by leadership. Includes research through various available tools.
  • Ensures that the prospect list is maintained in the CRM database.
  • Serves as the lead writer on assigned portfolio of grants and serves as secondary writer on proposals led by Director.
  • Collaborates with Director and finance and program representatives on budget development.
  • Supports preparation for donor visits.
  • Prepares backgrounder prospects and briefs leadership in advance of visits.
  • Track stewardship information and donor interests in donor database.
  • Ensure that gift acknowledgments for corporate and foundation donors within portfolio are sent.
  • Reconcile use of corporate and foundation funds with finance, as specified by donor.
Other
  • Complete other duties as requested based on department, organizational need and as directed by CDO.
  • Use CRM database to manage relationships, and track grants received, reports due, pending proposals, and prospects.
  • Provide editorial review/support to Development team as requested.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and events, as requested, to keep current in the fields of fundraising, domestic violence, and homelessness.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
SPECIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Works in an office environment that is well-lighted and well-ventilated.
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift ten pounds at times.
  • May require occasional work outside established working hours.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Exceptional writing and editorial skills.
  • Minimum of three years in an institutional fundraising role.
  • Experience with the New York fundraising landscape.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • May require occasional work outside established working hours.
  • Passion for URI's mission and core values.
  • Record of accomplishment in writing successful funding proposals.
  • Ability to collaborate with other departments in a professional, respectful manner to submit Letters of Inquiry, proposals, and reports on time and with accuracy.
  • Capability of working independently and seeking guidance as needed from Supervisor.
  • Ability to engage supervisor to resolve any challenges in completing projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with coworkers who have diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize within a fast-paced working environment.
  • Experience with most of the following platforms: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams), Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, Monday.com, and Every Action etc.
