POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Director of Scientific Publications

REPORTS TO: Vice President of Clinical and Scientific Affairs

SUMMARY: Oversees the editorial offices and production of AGA’s scholarly journals, supervises the journals’ managing editors, serves as the staff liaison to the AGA Institute Publications Committee, is the primary contact for AGA’s publishing partners, vendors, and consultants, and supports the vice president in developing and implementing the journals’ strategic goals.

Position Overview

The director is responsible for the operations of AGA’s scientific journals and maintains the quality, rigor, and reputation of the portfolio, which currently includes Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Techniques and Innovations in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Gastro Hep Advances. Successful candidates will be strategic thinkers, highly organized, adaptable, and thrive as part of a diverse team. We are interested in significant prior experience in scientific publications, preferably with society-owned journals. The ideal candidate will be open, innovative, collaborative, engaged and inclusive, in line with AGA’s core values.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Provide leadership and strategic direction to the AGA publications team, including direct supervision of four managing editors (editorial) and senior art director (medical illustration).
  2. Serve as the primary staff liaison to the AGA Institute Publications Committee.
  3. Serve as the primary point of contact for the AGA journals’ publisher, vendors, and consultants.
  4. Be responsible for the implementation and adherence to policies and processes for the AGA journals portfolio and recommend updates or additions as necessary.
  5. Oversee special projects that span the portfolio or involve additional stakeholders such as those from the AGA governing board or committees.
  6. In collaboration with the managing editors, assess key metrics for each journal including, but not limited to, citations, usage, and altmetrics.
  7. Make data-informed recommendations to the vice president, managing editors, boards of editors and other stakeholders regarding editorial and dissemination strategies.
  8. Identify opportunities for process improvement, business development, cross-journal/ inter-departmental initiatives for further exploration with the department vice president and managing editors.
  9. Directs the search for and selection of new editors.
  10. Maintain collaborative and productive working relationships with internal and external colleagues including the publisher, vendors, editors, volunteers, and AGA staff.
  11. Monitors and evaluates trends in the scholarly publishing industry and maintains a broad professional network.
  12. Provide reports on industry trends, journal performance, or other topics to senior management, society leadership, and other audiences as requested.
  13. Reviews annual budgets and routine financial statements to ensure accuracy and work with the vice president to develop financial forecasts.
  14. Assumes other duties commensurate with this position as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree, or higher, preferably in English, journalism, science, or related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.

2. At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in periodical publishing, preferably in society-owned scholarly journals, including proven editorial and project management skills; experience using online manuscript management systems (e.g., Editorial Manager) preferred.

3. At least 4 years of supervisory experience required.

4. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

5. Highly adaptable and flexible, with the ability to pivot quickly and think critically to address challenges and opportunities.

6. Highly organized with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

7. Experience with publisher contracts and negotiations preferred.

8. Tech savvy, with ability to quickly learn and master new software and database platforms.

9. Proficient in data analysis and interpretation.

10. Ability to work independently and use sound judgment to solve problems.

11. Understanding of scholarly research process and researcher-authors.

12. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
