Position Summary:
We are in search of a motivated, detail-oriented, and organized Scientific Outreach Specialist to become a vital member of our dynamic team. This role will primarily support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the Vaccine Research Center (VRC).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and respond to incoming media inquiries and interview requests, creating content for press releases, articles, and presentations that enhance the effectiveness of communication strategies for the VRC.
  • Maintain an archive of VRC communications and messages reviewed by subject matter experts, assisting in the dissemination of information to improve the clarity and impact of written materials.
  • Prepare comprehensive briefing documents and scientific summaries across various disease areas relevant to VRC initiatives.
  • Support diverse internal and external communication channels, including newsletters, intranet updates, and public messaging.
  • Contribute to the development of an annual editorial calendar aligned with VRC's communication goals and significant public events.
  • Ensure all public-facing materials are credible, clear, and effectively tailored to target audiences.
  • Create specialized communication materials that address complex scientific topics for diverse audiences.
  • Provide guidance and conduct reviews of materials produced by other divisions within NIAID.
  • Develop informative content regarding VRC's research programs and achievements.
  • Assist in crafting messaging and communication products that highlight research successes.
  • Design visual and written communication tools associated with NIH, NIAID, and VRC initiatives.
  • Prepare documents in accordance with established office protocols, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Review and evaluate documents for logical structure and accuracy, utilizing various resources for verification.
  • Continuously explore new communication methods to enhance efficiency and ensure messages resonate with the intended audience.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant scientific discipline is required.
  • At least one year of experience in a related scientific field is preferred.
  • Proven writing, editing, and proofreading skills are essential.
  • Experience in drafting scientific manuscripts and reviews is necessary.
  • Ability to convey scientific concepts to a general audience is crucial.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, etc.) is expected.
