Definition of Class

The Properties Designer oversees property design for theatrical application in the Department of Theatre and Film. Duties include designing, constructing, and acquiring properties for department productions. Duties also include managing student workers, making materials and supplies purchases, staying current with industry trends and techniques, and coordinating property needs for the department. This individual oversees the hiring, training, and scheduling of student workers who staff the props shop and will have authority to make discretionary purchases.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Attend all design and conceptual meetings, making a significant contribution to the development of the artistic approach to the show.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across areas within the department to ensure successful productions.
  • Attend all production meetings to ensure the proper execution of the design ideas relative to other areas working on the production
  • Prepares and maintains all fiscal documents related to property design
  • Produces a record of requisition amounts in order to maintain a running balance of all expenditures
  • Produce a cost out (estimated budget) of all properties needed for each departmental production.
  • Reconcile purchase requisitions related to department expenditures.
  • Monitors all prop account balances.
  • Responsible for the purchasing of all materials, supplies, and/or equipment needed for the properties design of each theatrical production.
  • Provide maintenance for all equipment used specifically for the prop shop.
  • Ensures that proper maintenance is provided for all above equipment.
  • Maintains all prop shop equipment and ensures a safe work environment in accord with scene shop guidelines.
  • Provides support for the properties design for each departmental production.
  • Works directly with directors, designers, and production stage managers to establish the necessary prop elements for each production.
  • Ensures timely delivery of all rehearsal props and final props for each production.
  • Responds to daily rehearsal and performance reports with information as necessary.
  • Assist the scenic designers within the department with set dressing as needed.
  • Collaborate with scenic designers to ensure that all set dressings and related elements are in alignment with the overall design of the scenic elements.
  • Provide assistance in sourcing and obtaining set dressing and furniture pieces for departmental productions.
  • Ensures upkeep and organization of existing and future departmental prop inventory and storage.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned or required. 
Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Facilitates the property design for each departmental theatrical production.
  2. Strong ability to handle issues proactively – ability to troubleshoot problems quickly and give a solution
  3. Ability to manage several projects together independently.
Minimum Education/Experience

Education:
Bachelor Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

 

AND

 

Experience:
One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
