JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Metals, Ceramics, and Coatings Processing Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) of Penn State University is in search of a dedicated Engineering Support Analyst to contribute to various initiatives within the department focused on material synthesis and analysis across ceramic, metallic, semiconductor, and composite materials.

Your role will involve supporting projects related to materials design, enhancement, field-assisted sintering technology (FAST), metallography, and analytical characterization of materials, including powders and bulk compositions, aimed at improving properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, thermal protection, and joining technologies.

ARL is a recognized DoD SkillBridge partner and encourages applications from transitioning military personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

- Assist in the synthesis, processing, characterization, and fabrication of advanced materials and coatings across various programs, including FAST, cold spray technology, and chemical vapor deposition.
- Support the design and monitoring of experimental setups, and analyze data for a diverse range of materials and coatings aimed at enhancing performance for applications in aerospace, defense, biomedical, and other industries.
- Troubleshoot complex equipment issues and facilitate minor repairs, collaborating with electronics technicians or electrical engineers as necessary.
- Utilize basic electronic testing equipment (e.g., digital multi-meter, oscilloscope) and assist research personnel in their projects, fostering a collaborative environment within the research team.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures.

This position typically requires an Associate's Degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with a preference for degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, or related fields.


Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proficient understanding of various coating deposition processes.
- Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as:
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
- Optical Microscopy (OM)
- X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
- Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
- Optical Profilometry
- Sample and failure analysis.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Prior internship experience in process development, experimental design, materials processing, or analysis is advantageous.

Your work location will be onsite at the ARL at Penn State, a key component of one of the nation's leading research universities, focusing on defense science and technology.

Employment with ARL will require successful completion of a government security investigation, and applicants must be U.S. citizens. A pre-employment drug screening will also be necessary.
