Title: Junior Network Engineer

Status: Full-Time / Exempt

Principal Function:

The Junior Network Engineer is responsible for the configuration, implementation, and support of NetCarrier’s internal and customer networks. This person acts as high-level technical resource on configurations and network builds, specifically as they apply to customer installations. All members of the Network Engineering department serve as Tier 3 network support, handling escalations from Technical Support and Network Operations.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

Equipment programming, configuration, and maintenance (DSLAMs, IADs, edge routers, switches, firewalls). Assist the Circuit Design group with troubleshooting and acceptance of new circuits (T1, fiber, EoC). Administration and assignment of public IP addressing. While not a primary function, this position is responsible for working with both vendors and customers to resolve issues and to ensure that delivered services match expectations. Work with our dispatch team to support customer installations (co-location and on-site). Assist with special projects and after-hours maintenance as assigned by department manager. Rotating 24×7 on-call emergency maintenance and trouble ticket support as Tier 3 escalation point.

Status and Scope:

This position reports directly to the manager of Network Engineering. The Junior Network Engineer works closely with tier 1 support and network operations for trouble resolution, as well as with order support personnel from various departments for new service delivery.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred; CCNA or equivalent required. Experience: 1-3 years of directly-related professional work experience. Strong knowledge of Cisco IOS, Adtran IOS, IP Routing (including dynamic routing via OSPF, BGP, etc.), Switching, VoIP, Ethernet, MPLS, VPN, Firewalls. A working knowledge of T1/DS1 (PPP, ATM, ISDN), DS3, and SONET is desirable.
