What We Are Looking For

Under the direction of the Senior Director for Sustainability, the Sustainability Specialist for Operations and Engagement will be responsible for the implementation and execution of environmental sustainability initiatives for Baylor University and will work with diverse campus and community partners to build a culture of sustainability. Operational priorities will align with impact areas defined by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) through Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) Report, and progress towards sustainability goals should be integrated in co-curricular educational opportunities for students. The Sustainability Specialist will further contribute to a culture of sustainability at Baylor by developing and leading communications, events, and initiatives to highlight leading work and communicate priorities for Baylor’s commitment to sustainability. The Sustainability Specialist for Operations and Engagement will partner with academic and non-academic departments, student groups, and other on-campus groups to unify efforts and create synergies for sustainability related programs and initiatives across the institution. 

Qualifications include:

Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred; relevant experience may substitute for degree in the sustainability field.  Three (3) years minimum experience involved with sustainability programs, projects, and/or initiatives, preferably in higher education.  Ability to work effectively and collaborate with multi-disciplined teams across the institution.  Familiarity with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) preferred. Certified Energy Manager, LEED Certification, or other related certifications preferred. Have excellent organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as needed for special events or meetings. Must have a valid driver’s license.

What You Will Do

Coordinate, facilitate, and advise the work of Baylor’s Sustainability Committee as an ex-officio member. Assist in sustainability reporting and assessment of sustainability programs through AASHE STARS and other relevant reporting and assessment frameworks as requested. Contribute to the development of sustainability goals that are developed through the Office of Sustainability and the Sustainability Committee Under the direction of the Senior Director, implements projects and programs to support the institution’s sustainability vision and goals. Integrate engaging co-curricular programs related to sustainability that can deepen knowledge for students interested in the field of sustainability and foster a culture of stewardship broadly amongst the student body. Establish, lead, and maintain communications about sustainability initiatives and topics to campus and broader community, including current website, future newsletters, social media, etc. Connect various fragmented sustainability initiatives between academic and non-academic departments, as well as individual students and student groups, to synergize efforts and outcomes. Maintain and manage sustainability records and reporting requirements related to sustainability efforts, including but not limited to facility/campus energy usage, building certifications, waste/diversion, etc. Assists the Senior Director in maintaining connections with local and regional partners including but not limited to other higher education institutions, City of Waco, McLennan County, and State of Texas officials. In support of the Senior Director, proactively outreaches with the greater campus community for sustainability initiatives and practices by providing meaningful engagement events, presentations, communication tools, activities, and experiential learning opportunities. Assists in finding and completing grant opportunities to fund sustainability initiatives. Partner with Facilities Management team members to infuse sustainability principles into capital project design and daily operations & maintenance of facilities and grounds. Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor’s mission.  Ability to comply with university policies.  Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
