Position Overview

The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will operate under the guidance of the Senior Director for Sustainability, focusing on the execution and management of eco-friendly initiatives at Baylor University. This role involves collaboration with a variety of campus and community stakeholders to foster a sustainable culture. The operational objectives will be aligned with key impact areas established by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) through the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) Report. The progress towards sustainability targets will be integrated into co-curricular educational experiences for students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and support the activities of Baylor's Sustainability Committee as an ex-officio member.
  • Assist in the assessment and reporting of sustainability programs using AASHE STARS and other relevant frameworks.
  • Contribute to the formulation of sustainability objectives developed by the Office of Sustainability and the Sustainability Committee.
  • Implement projects and initiatives that align with the institution's sustainability vision and goals under the direction of the Senior Director.
  • Create engaging co-curricular programs related to sustainability that enhance student knowledge and promote a culture of stewardship among the student body.
  • Lead and maintain communication regarding sustainability initiatives to the campus and broader community, including website updates, newsletters, and social media outreach.
  • Connect various sustainability efforts across academic and non-academic departments, as well as among individual students and student organizations, to enhance collaboration and outcomes.
  • Manage sustainability records and reporting obligations related to sustainability efforts, including facility energy usage, building certifications, and waste management.
  • Assist the Senior Director in maintaining partnerships with local and regional entities, including other educational institutions and governmental officials.
  • Proactively engage with the campus community on sustainability initiatives through meaningful events, presentations, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities to support sustainability projects.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management to integrate sustainability principles into capital project designs and the daily operations of facilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission of the institution.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and maintain regular attendance.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is preferred, with relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in sustainability programs, projects, or initiatives, ideally within higher education.
  • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with diverse teams across the institution.
  • Familiarity with AASHE and the STARS framework is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Energy Manager or LEED Certification are advantageous.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Availability to work occasional evenings or weekends for special events or meetings.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
