Position Overview

The Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities at Rhode Island College invites applications for a Technical Assistance Specialist, Adult Professional Development. The person in this position will design, implement and evaluate training and professional development targeted to improve the quality of life for adults with developmental disabilities. The technical assistance specialist will work with independently and as part of a team to deliver in-person and online trainings, both synchronous and asynchronous. The person in this position will also help to identify, develop and launch online learning platforms and content management systems.

Primary Purpose

This full-time grant-funded position is located at the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities. The scope of the position involves leading training and professional development within the Sherlock Center’s adult initiatives. The person in this position will work on grants and contracts that focus on the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) including co-occurring physical, mental or age-related needs. This person in this position will work with teams of professionals to support the design, development, implementation and evaluation of promised deliverables, training, demonstration projects and research efforts. Assisting with grant writing, data collection and reporting is also expected.

Essential Duties

Development/Implementation/Evaluation of Programs and Curriculum

• Apply research‐based practices of instructional design and adult learning theory using the necessary tools to create a high‐quality training program and implement those practices as specified (e.g. learning activities; training content and assignments; and participant knowledge and/or skill assessments).

• Collaborate with stakeholders on the design of education and training program and technical assistance needed as directed by grants and program objectives.

• Interact with local/state leadership personnel and advisory boards related to project activities and outcomes.

• Provide technical assistance, outreach, education and consultation activities to state and local agencies, organizations and other stakeholders.

• Provide project management to ensure that deliverables are completed on time and as promised to funders and partners.

• Plan, organize and execute meetings related to consultation and technical assistance activities for internal and external project staff and participants.

• Plan, design, and deliver webinars, conference calls and in‐person meetings.
• Disseminate information in variety of formats, including blogs, newsletters, conference and poster sessions.

• Promote and recruit participants for program activities.

• Plan and coordinate event logistics, registration, materials preparation and program activities.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and evaluating professional development or training.

Required Qualifications

Education: BA/BS degree
Experience: Four years of experience in human services, business, education, evaluation & measurement, public health, psychology, social work or related discipline.

In lieu of an academic degree, at least four years of experience directing and/or managing complex, multi-year projects or activities for people with IDD or other disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of key issues, evidenced-based best practices and resources in community living and employment policy and practice issues related to long-term services and supports for persons with IDD such as workforce recruitment and retention challenges.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team across multiple settings and initiatives in a collaborative environment.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely with people of diverse backgrounds and levels of authority.

• Demonstrated proficiency in research, writing and presentation skills.

• Multilingual.

• Experience working in culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

• Demonstrated experience working with Direct Support Professionals and other professionals within the disability community
