Job Title: Mechanical Design Manager

Location: Remote

Duration: Long Term Contract

Job summary

Seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a Professional Engineer (PE) license and deep hands-on experience in HVAC and plumbing system design, installation oversight, and commissioning. You will lead a small team of designers and engineers, own technical delivery for building mechanical systems, ensure code compliance, manage stakeholder expectations, and drive projects from schematic design through construction closeout.

This is a fictional job description for hiring or sample/template use.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary MEP team (HVAC, plumbing, contractors, and consultants).
  • Serve as the PE-of-record on medium-to-large commercial, institutional, or industrial projects.
  • Develop and review HVAC and plumbing design documents: load calculations, equipment selection, ductwork and piping schematics, details, and specifications.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (local building codes, IMC, IPC, ASHRAE, NFPA as applicable).
  • Coordinate mechanical systems with architecture, electrical, structural, and fire protection disciplines.
  • Oversee construction administration: submittal reviews, shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, site inspections, and punch-list resolution.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources; track design milestones and deliverables.
  • Lead commissioning and start-up activities for HVAC and plumbing systems; verify performance to design intent.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, proposal scopes, cost estimates, and progress updates to clients and senior management.
  • Develop and implement standards, best practices, and QA/QC processes for HVAC and plumbing designs.
  • Evaluate and select equipment and vendors; provide technical support during procurement and installation.
  • Support sustainability, energy-efficiency initiatives and coordinate with sustainability teams (e.g., energy modelling, heat recovery, economizers, water conservation strategies).

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license (state-specific; must be in good standing).
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in HVAC and plumbing design, at least 3 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Demonstrated experience as PE-of-record for commercial/institutional projects.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems (centrifugal chillers, packaged units, VRF/heat pump systems, AHUs, VAV, fan coils) and plumbing systems (domestic water, sanitary, storm, gas, medical gases if applicable).
  • Proficiency with design tools: Revit MEP, AutoCAD, duct/piping sizing software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with construction administration, site coordination, and commissioning activities.
  • Solid understanding of applicable codes/standards (IMC, IPC, ASHRAE 90.1/62.1, NFPA, local amendments).
  • Strong communication skills—able to present technical topics to clients and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, budgets and timelines.
