Mechanical/Structural Branch Manager

The Technology Group operates within the Critical Mission Solutions (CMS) Line of Business, focusing on the design, construction, and management of specialized and intricate research and development facilities. Our portfolio includes wind tunnels for various industries, rocket test stands, climatic chambers, jet engine test cells, and more. We serve diverse sectors such as automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace, with notable clients including government agencies and leading automotive manufacturers.

As the Mechanical/Structural Branch Manager, you will report directly to the Director of Engineering and play a pivotal leadership role in several key areas:

  • Foster the development of future leaders within your branch.
  • Lead business development initiatives for small and single-discipline projects, providing your team with exposure to the business aspects of engineering.
  • Assist our Business Development Principals in crafting proposals for larger, multi-discipline projects.
  • Stay informed about the latest technological advancements and advocate for the ongoing exploration and implementation of new tools and training for your team.

In this capacity, you will collaborate with section supervisors to plan, organize, lead, and manage the resources of a team of mechanical design and structural engineers, as well as designer/drafters. This role offers the opportunity to oversee the mechanical/structural branch, determine staffing needs, evaluate performance, and make informed personnel decisions. The branch currently comprises approximately 55 skilled engineers and designers engaged in a variety of unique and challenging projects, ranging from quick-turnaround tasks to extensive multi-year endeavors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive marketing and business development efforts for your branch.
  • Engage with supervisors and staff to provide guidance, coaching, and monitor progress.
  • Assist supervisors and staff in validating technical approaches and reviewing team outputs as necessary.
  • Develop career advancement pathways for supervisors and employees, including promotions and training opportunities.
  • Manage and balance workflow within the branch.
  • Mentor employees as required.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with team members.
  • Perform annual performance evaluations.
  • Administer disciplinary actions and terminations when necessary.
  • Review and approve employee timecards on a weekly basis.
  • Lead branch staff meetings as needed.
  • Participate in long-term strategic planning for the branch, including recruitment and succession planning.
  • Coordinate co-op and summer internship opportunities.
  • Attend project reviews for initiatives involving branch support.
  • Work with supervisors to ensure engineers/designers align their work with deliverables, budgets, and schedules.
  • Solicit feedback from clients and project managers regarding individual and team performance.
  • Track and assign mandatory training for employees.
  • Travel between offices and client sites as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required due to federal project requirements.
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree or eight years with a Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with effective communication skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the design process, including marketing, planning, estimating, budgeting, execution, and construction.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of engineers and designers across multiple projects.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional climbing and crawling.
  • Exposure to high noise levels and construction sites.
  • Travel requirements of approximately 15%.

Attendance Expectations:

  • Overtime may be required occasionally.
  • Regular attendance is essential.
  • Punctuality is critical.
