Mechanical/Structural Branch Manager
The Technology Group operates as a performance unit within the Critical Mission Solutions (CMS) Line of Business. This group specializes in the design, construction, and operation of unique and intricate research and development facilities, including wind tunnels (for aerospace, automotive, and motorsports), rocket test stands, climatic chambers, jet engine test cells, acoustic chambers, altitude test facilities, captive trajectory systems, and nuclear facilities. Our projects cater to the automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace sectors. Recent collaborations include notable organizations such as NASA, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Energy, Audi, Boeing, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda, General Motors, Volkswagen, among others across North America, Europe, and Asia.
As the Mechanical/Structural Branch Manager, you will report directly to the Director of Engineering and play a pivotal leadership role in the following areas:
- Fostering the development of future leaders within your branch.
- Proactively leading business development initiatives for small and single-discipline projects, providing your team with exposure to the business aspects of engineering.
- Assisting our Business Development Principals in crafting proposals for large and multi-discipline projects.
- Staying informed about the latest technological trends and tools relevant to your branch's disciplines, advocating for ongoing exploration and implementation of new technologies and training as appropriate.
In this capacity, you will collaborate with section supervisors to plan, organize, lead, and manage the resources of a team of mechanical design and structural engineers, as well as designer/drafters. This role offers the opportunity to oversee the entire mechanical/structural branch, determine personnel needs and assignments, evaluate individual and group performance, provide feedback, and make personnel-related decisions and recommendations. The Mechanical/Structural branch currently comprises approximately 55 skilled engineers and designers engaged in a variety of unique and challenging projects, ranging from quick turnaround tasks to extensive multi-year projects with over 10,000 labor hours in a single discipline. The branch typically manages around 20 concurrent projects and undertakes up to three dozen projects annually.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engaging in marketing and business development efforts to actively promote your branch's services.
- Collaborating with supervisors and staff to provide guidance, coaching, and monitor progress.
- Assisting supervisors and staff in validating technical approaches, including reviewing team outputs when necessary.
- Creating career advancement pathways for supervisors and employees, including promotions and voluntary training for professional development.
- Identifying and nurturing future leaders and addressing technical training needs.
- Managing and balancing workflow within the branch.
- Mentoring employees as required.
- Conducting quarterly one-on-one meetings with employees.
- Performing annual performance evaluations.
- Administering employee disciplinary actions and/or terminations as necessary.
- Reviewing and approving employee timecards on a weekly basis.
- Leading branch staff meetings as needed.
- Participating in long-term planning for the branch, including recruitment and succession planning.
- Coordinating co-op and summer internship opportunities.
- Attending monthly project reviews for projects supported by your branch.
- Collaborating with supervisors to ensure engineers/designers plan their work in alignment with deliverables, budget, and schedule.
- Soliciting feedback from clients and project managers regarding individual and team performance and product quality.
- Tracking and assigning mandatory training for employees.
- Traveling between offices and client sites as necessary.
Qualifications:
1. U.S. Citizenship is required due to federal regulations governing a significant portion of the assigned work.
2. A BS or MS Degree in Mechanical, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
3. A BS degree necessitates a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience; an MS degree requires at least eight (8) years of relevant experience.
4. Proven leadership skills demonstrated through prior supervisory experience; effective communication with others is essential.
5. A PE license is highly preferred.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of the entire design process, including marketing, planning, estimating, budgeting, execution, delivery, post-design, and construction.
7. Demonstrated leadership ability to oversee a team of mechanical and structural engineers and designer/drafters, led by two or more supervisors, working on multiple small and large projects concurrently.
8. Strong time management and organizational skills are required.
