Position Summary


Under the guidance of the Principal or designated instructional staff, this role involves executing a variety of educational activities; providing enhanced learning experiences for students in designated areas; and performing various clerical and supportive tasks for educators.
This includes assisting with the lifting, toileting, eating, hygiene, and mobility needs of students on a periodic or regular basis; along with related duties as required.

The assignment to specific sites will be determined based on student needs.

Distinctive Features


Positions in this category are characterized by responsibilities related to supporting students within the Special Education Program. Incumbents are expected to possess an understanding of and sensitivity to the learning challenges faced by these students.



Typical Duties

- Collaborates with instructional staff to develop and present educational materials and learning exercises;

- Provides tutoring for individuals and small groups to reinforce and follow up on learning activities;

- Supervises students in various settings including classrooms, playgrounds, and during meal times;

- Administers standardized assessments;

- Maintains student records, attendance, and documentation;

May assist students with toileting (stipend included), eating, and hygiene needs;

Assists with the transportation of students, including those using wheelchairs;

- Performs various clerical tasks such as filing, typing, or duplicating materials;

- Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher;

- Aids in sustaining a clean, organized, and appealing learning environment by undertaking tasks such as cleaning the classroom, arranging displays, or preparing bulletin boards; and

- May communicate in a foreign language with students to clarify instructions and respond to inquiries.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of:

- Student behavior and characteristics of children in the Special Education Program;

- Techniques for managing and motivating children;

- Correct English usage;

- Routine record-keeping; and

- General purposes and objectives of public education.

Skills Required:

- Ability to take responsibility for supervising students;

- Demonstrate patience, warmth, and a genuine interest in children;

- Learn and effectively use standard teaching aids and office equipment;

- Understand and implement basic instructional methods and procedures;

- Perform routine clerical tasks;

- Comprehend and execute oral and written instructions; and

- Foster cooperative and effective working relationships with both children and adults.

Experience


Two years of experience working with children in an educational or childcare environment, ideally including experience in Special Education.



Education

Completion of the twelfth grade, preferably supplemented by coursework in child care, psychology, or guidance.

Requirements / Qualifications


All classified employees must sign an oath of allegiance to the Constitution of the State of California and the United States, demonstrate good moral character, and provide evidence of a negative TB test.

Additionally, candidates must provide proof of citizenship or appropriate immigration status.

California law mandates that public educational employees undergo fingerprinting for a confidential background investigation at the time of employment, regardless of previous fingerprinting.


All employment offers are contingent upon satisfactory results from the Post Offer Pre-Placement Physical Evaluation Program.

This physical assessment ensures that candidates possess the minimum strength required to perform essential job functions.
