Job Description / Essential Elements:

Martinez Unified School District Classified Job Description Custodian 40 Hours/Week - 12 Months/Year

Definition: Under supervision, responsible for maintaining an assigned building area in a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly condition; securing rooms and buildings; performing specialized cleaning and maintenance tasks; and executing related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

  • Perform sweeping, scrubbing, dusting, and cleaning of offices, hallways, workshops, restrooms, classrooms, cafeterias, auditoriums, libraries, gyms, pools, and stairways;
  • Strip, mop, wax, and buff floors;
  • Vacuum carpets and pools;
  • Empty and clean trash receptacles;
  • Wash windows, walls, and woodwork, and conduct touch-up painting;
  • Clean erasers, blackboards, desks, cabinets, shelves, and window sills;
  • Maintain cleanliness of sidewalks and curbs, and remove debris from school grounds;
  • Replace light bulbs;
  • Inspect for broken locks and glass, and report repair needs;
  • Adjust desks and set up tables and chairs;
  • Perform minor repairs on locks, pencil sharpeners, and equipment;
  • Secure the building and manage lighting and alarm systems;
  • Operate custodial equipment such as buffers and vacuum cleaners;
  • Manage flags by raising, lowering, folding, and storing;
  • Operate boilers and heaters;
  • Assist in the restoration of buildings and grounds during summer breaks;
  • Guide students and visitors;
  • Monitor areas to deter vandalism and theft;
  • May supervise student workers;
  • Be available for emergency situations.

Desirable Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • Modern cleaning techniques and the proper use and maintenance of cleaning materials and equipment;
  • First aid and safety practices related to cleaning methods and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Skillfully and efficiently use cleaning materials and equipment;
  • Perform physically demanding tasks;
  • Work independently without direct supervision;
  • Be available for on-call emergencies;
  • Understand and adhere to a work schedule;
  • Comprehend and execute oral and written instructions;
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with students and others encountered during work;
  • Successfully pass pre-employment functional capacity assessments and physical evaluations.
Experience: Some experience in custodial work is preferred; character references may be verified. Education: Equivalent to the completion of the eighth grade. License: A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required.Requirements / Qualifications: Resume and 3 References. Comments and Other Information: On-call employment with various shifts and locations available.

Prior experience is desirable.
