Job Description

The Daughters of the American Revolution, a 501(c)(3) membership organization, seeks an experienced financial professional to serve as our Controller.

This role is responsible for managing all financial operations, including setting and enforcing accounting policies, overseeing financial infrastructure, and preparing the annual audit.

The Controller will report to the Executive Director and liaise with executive and committee leadership regarding organizational strategy and financial planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of accounting professionals.
  • Establish and maintain a systematic financial reporting system.
  • Protect Society assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Account for transactions in accordance with GAAP and direct the development and implementation of accounting methods and procedures.
  • Provide regular financial updates by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Recommend Society budgets to executive leadership.
  • Manage the annual external audit process and prepare schedules and forms for the draft Form 990, 990-T, and D-20.
  • Manage banking and investment relationships, including cash management and investment transactions.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by keeping abreast of existing and new legislation.
  • Oversee systems related to payroll and benefit payments, procurement, travel expenses, and company-wide policies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Active CPA certification.
  • A minimum of 10 years combined experience in accounting and finance, preferably with 3-5 years in a non-profit or association organization setting and prior management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP/FASB requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing internal accounting controls and maintaining policies and procedures.
  • Advanced interpersonal and relationship management skills, especially at the c-suite level.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Strong project management and tracking skills with excellent follow-up capabilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet multiple deadlines, and exercise sound judgment and problem-solving capabilities.
