Calaveras County is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to serve as a vital link between the community and law enforcement professionals. Our communications center operates 24/7, 365 days a year, relying on experienced dispatchers to handle emergency calls and dispatch units efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and respond to emergency calls from the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Determine the nature and location of emergencies, utilizing knowledge of geography and road systems.
- Dispatch appropriate law enforcement and emergency units, maintaining effective communication with units on assignment.
- Handle requests for information from various departments, ensuring accurate and timely responses.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports, adhering to established procedures and policies.
- Assist in emergency disaster planning and updating of manuals, staying up-to-date with relevant protocols and procedures.
Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Terminology and codes used in emergency communications, including relevant laws and regulations.
- Geography and road systems, including knowledge of local terrain and infrastructure.
- English language usage and grammar, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Skills and Abilities:
- Learn and apply dispatching skills, staying current with new technologies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Work calmly and efficiently in high-pressure situations, prioritizing tasks and managing stress.
- Establish and maintain good relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
- Operate communications equipment, including radios and computer systems.
- Follow established procedures and policies, adhering to regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with experience in public-facing roles, such as customer service or law enforcement support.
Special Requirements:
- A valid California driver's license is required.
- Willingness to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Completion of required training courses, including emergency medical dispatch and crisis negotiation.
