Job Title: Public Safety Communications Dispatcher

Under the general supervision of the Department of Emergency Management, the Public Safety Communications Dispatcher plays a critical role in responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. This position requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, utilizing a computer-aided dispatch system and two-way radio dispatch console.
  • Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) field units to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Evaluate and prioritize incoming reports of police, fire, and medical emergencies, and transmit complete and accurate information to appropriate field personnel.
  • Monitor and coordinate the status of incidents and records of dispatched emergency service personnel and apparatus.
  • Provide information and referrals to the public and other agencies, and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
  • Two years of experience in a public contact position providing information and/or a service, or in a position where the primary responsibility is interacting with people.
Selection Process:

The selection process for this position will include a written examination, a performance examination, and a background investigation. Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to participate in the performance examination, which will assess their ability to perform the duties of the Public Safety Communications Dispatcher. Candidates who pass the performance examination will be invited to participate in a background investigation, which will include a review of their employment history, education, and personal references.
