About the Role

DESC is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our team. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing crisis support and case management services to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses and/or substance disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide intense case management services to adults in crisis, including outreach, engagement, and support.
  • Assess and coordinate daily driving needs for clients, transporting them to appointments and community resources.
  • Integrate personal experience with mental illness into work with program participants, promoting a culture of recovery and empowerment.
  • Utilize a recovery-based approach to assist consumers in reaching their fullest potential.
  • Assist with various tasks, including facilitating access to food, clothing, hygiene services, medical care, and community resources.
  • Advocate for clients' access to community resources and services, ensuring their needs are met and rights maintained.
  • Participate in crisis intervention and safety management tasks, collaborating with other staff to ensure a safe and secure environment.
Requirements
  • Ability to obtain Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program within 60 days of employment.
  • Lived experience as a consumer of behavioral health services (mental health and/or substance use treatment) or be the parent or legal guardian of a child who has received behavioral health services.
  • Strong personal understanding of recovery and resilience, client partnerships, and client choice.
  • Ability to drive an agency or personal vehicle to conduct agency-related business, with a current Washington State driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant community resources and methods for accessing them.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Certified Peer Specialist certification from the Washington State Peer Counselor Training Program.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation skills, crisis intervention, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Experience in outreach or crisis work.
