Position Responsibilities

This role is primarily focused on the operation, inspection, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical and HVAC/Refrigeration systems, including associated electric, pneumatic, electronic, and computerized direct digital temperature controls.

Key tasks include:

  • Conducting systems analysis and performing maintenance and repairs on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment such as air handlers, exhaust fans, humidification systems, boilers, chillers, circulating pumps, and filtration systems.
  • Maintaining pneumatic, electric, and Direct Digital (DDC) temperature controls, air compressors, and refrigeration systems.
  • Providing maintenance and repairs on emergency generators, plumbing systems, and lighting controls.
  • Collaborating with facility occupants and management to recommend and implement energy-saving initiatives.

Compensation Details

This position falls under pay schedule/range 03-15, with a starting hourly wage of $26.55. Salary for current state employees may differ based on applicable compensation policies. This role does not offer telecommuting options and requires a twelve-month probationary period.

Applicant Requirements

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application.

The Department may conduct pre-employment drug screenings, and any applicant offered a position requiring such screening must successfully pass as a condition of employment.

Criminal background checks will be performed on applicants prior to selection, and all new employees are subject to fingerprinting upon hire.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will possess:

  • A high level of mechanical aptitude and knowledge of computerized HVAC systems, along with pneumatic and mechanical systems.
  • Expertise in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and other mechanical systems commonly found in institutional settings.
  • Skills in repairing and adjusting mechanical devices, valves, pumps, and controls.
  • The ability to operate various power and hand tools used in mechanical maintenance.
  • Vigilance in monitoring equipment for necessary actions and potential hazards.
  • Awareness of safety precautions related to mechanical systems.
  • Willingness to work in challenging conditions, including confined spaces and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • The physical capability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of asbestos hazards and abatement procedures.

Preferred qualifications include technical education in electronics, HVAC, and refrigeration, along with four or more years of experience as an HVAC Technician and a valid EPA Section 608 Technician Certification.
