Position Overview

This role primarily involves the operation, inspection, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical and HVAC/Refrigeration systems, including associated electric, pneumatic, electronic, and computerized direct digital temperature controls.

The selected candidate will conduct systems analysis, maintenance, and repairs on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment, which may include air handlers, exhaust fans, humidification systems, boilers, chillers, circulating pumps, filtration systems, and temperature control systems.

Additional responsibilities include maintenance or repairs on emergency generators, plumbing systems, and lighting controls, as well as collaborating with facility occupants and management to recommend and implement energy-saving initiatives.

Compensation Information

This position falls under pay schedule/range 03-15, with a starting hourly wage of $26.55. Salary for current state employees may vary based on applicable compensation provisions. This position does not offer telecommuting options and requires a twelve-month probationary period.

Job Requirements

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screenings. Successful candidates must pass this screening as a condition of employment.

Criminal background checks will be performed on applicants prior to selection. All new employees are subject to fingerprinting upon hire.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A high level of mechanical aptitude and knowledge of computerized HVAC systems, along with pneumatic and mechanical systems.
  • Expertise in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and other mechanical systems commonly found in institutional buildings.
  • Skills in repairing and adjusting mechanical devices, valves, pumps, fans, compressors, and control switches.
  • The ability to operate various power and hand tools used in mechanical maintenance.
  • Vigilance in monitoring for necessary actions, malfunctions, and potential safety hazards in mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety protocols associated with building mechanical systems.
  • A willingness to work in challenging conditions, including dusty or dirty environments, extreme temperatures, and confined spaces, while utilizing personal protective equipment.
  • The physical capability to perform manual labor, including climbing, bending, crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Understanding of asbestos hazards and abatement procedures.

Well-qualified candidates will have completed technical education in electronics, HVAC, or refrigeration, along with four or more years of experience as an HVAC Technician, and hold a valid EPA Section 608 Technician Certification.
