Position Overview: The Lead Virtualization Solutions Engineer will be responsible for overseeing all facets of VMware virtualization, including the configuration, deployment, and management of servers within a virtualized framework, as well as VDI implementations. A solid foundation in Windows and network management is essential. This role demands a blend of engineering, operational, and technical support skills. Candidates should possess strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities. The engineer will collaborate closely with technical leads, infrastructure teams, and cross-departmental groups to assess business requirements and deliver comprehensive technical solutions while managing and securing virtualization assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a minimum of two days per week onsite at the client’s headquarters.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call support rotation for server infrastructure every 2-3 months.
  • Install and configure vCenter Server effectively.
  • Manage and maintain ESXi cluster servers.
  • Establish and configure High Availability (HA), vMotion, and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS).
  • Oversee the configuration of Datacenters, clusters, resource pools, virtual machines, and virtual networking.
  • Monitor the health and performance of virtual machines across various data centers.
  • Facilitate VM migrations and replications between data centers.
  • Implement disaster recovery strategies for the virtualized environment using Site Recovery Manager (SRM).
  • Support VMware management tools, including Aria Operations and Log Insight.
  • Install, configure, and manage VDI solutions utilizing VMware Horizon.
  • Assist system administrators in resolving VDI and virtual server issues, including outage responses and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain and update environmental documentation, standard operating procedures, and engineering records.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure the stability and health of virtualization platforms.
  • Work with leads to identify and evaluate solutions that meet functional and technical requirements, potentially involving hardware and software.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot server systems, including Windows and Linux environments.
  • Conduct security hardening, patch management, and server certificate updates.
  • Develop documentation for system installation plans and administration guides.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by lead engineers or project managers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to install and configure vCenter Server.
  • Experience working with ESXi cluster servers.
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring the health of virtual machines across data centers.
  • Familiarity with VMware Horizon View, vCenter, vSphere Client, and VMware Workstation.
  • Understanding of VMware's integration with complex storage technologies.
  • Experience managing VMware Horizon user profiles.
  • Extensive knowledge of multi-vendor server operating systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise Windows environment operations and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Distributed File System and CIFS.
  • Experience in root cause analysis, risk identification, and mitigation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
  • Experience in a fast-paced IT service management support environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • VMware certifications such as VCP/VCAP and/or VDI Certification.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with VMware virtual environments and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Strong background in Microsoft SQL.
  • Experience optimizing desktops for platform interoperability and serving as a liaison between VDI technologies.
  • Familiarity with VMware 7 and ideally VMware 8.
  • Experience with Hyperconverged Infrastructures (HCI) and other hypervisor and VDI technologies, particularly Nutanix.
  • Experience with cloud environments, including AWS and/or Azure certifications.
  • Scripting experience with PowerShell and VBScript.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code technologies such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Knowledge of DISA STIG and CIS Benchmark guidelines for Microsoft Windows servers.
