Position Overview
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist plays a vital role in supporting primary healthcare by delivering comprehensive nutritional evaluations, education, and management for patients facing chronic health issues. This position is essential for those at risk of disease progression or those seeking dietary approaches to enhance their health and manage existing conditions.

Collaborative Care
Working alongside physicians and a multidisciplinary team, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist formulates and executes personalized care strategies aimed at enhancing patient comprehension and management of their health conditions, thereby optimizing their quality of life and improving clinical outcomes.

This role also involves assisting patients with cognitive challenges and those experiencing food insecurity, guiding them towards valuable resources.

Program Development
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist will collaborate closely with our Weight Management and Lifestyle Medicine programs, which are integrated within the Division of General Internal Medicine, while also providing nutritional care to our general patient population.

Additionally, this position entails the creation and oversight of various nutritional initiatives, including group sessions designed for the division.

Key Responsibilities
To excel in this role, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist must effectively perform the following duties:

  1. Conduct thorough nutritional assessments, education, and management for patients referred by healthcare providers or multidisciplinary teams.
  2. Provide guidance on modified diets related to health promotion, weight management, and chronic condition management.
  3. Design and facilitate group sessions for patients requiring ongoing nutritional support as part of their overall treatment plan.
  4. Coordinate and evaluate nutritional education initiatives in alignment with national standards and guidelines.
  5. Address dietary vitamin deficiencies and develop educational materials on nutritional topics for both patients and healthcare professionals.
  6. Educate and collaborate with medical residents on nutrition-related topics, including dietary plans for diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
  7. Create and deliver educational programs tailored to diverse ethnic and cultural groups to enhance nutritional understanding.
  8. Prepare and present nutrition-related presentations to various audiences.
  9. Maintain accurate documentation and billing for all care management interactions.

Qualifications
Education: A bachelor’s degree or higher, with coursework accredited by the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, along with successful completion of a dietetic internship or coordinated undergraduate dietetic program.

Licensure: Must be licensed and registered to practice as a Registered Dietician (RD) in the District of Columbia by the proposed start date, with current certification from the Commission of Dietetic Registration.

Experience: Previous experience working with adult outpatient populations, particularly those seeking weight management and individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Physical Requirements: The role requires frequent walking, standing, and reaching in an office environment, with the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull over 20 lbs. Exposure to healthcare settings may necessitate the use of personal protective equipment.
