Job Overview

At Harlem Children's Zone, we are committed to fostering a healthier community through improved nutrition and sustainable food practices. Our Culinary Team plays a pivotal role in this mission by engaging the community in hands-on nutrition education across various settings.

The Culinary Operations Supervisor is a leadership position responsible for managing the culinary team. This role involves overseeing daily food preparation and cooking in accordance with established recipes and production standards, while ensuring compliance with food safety and sanitation protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Onboard and train new culinary staff members.
  • Foster a respectful and dignified work environment for all team members.
  • Set clear performance expectations and actively listen to team feedback to address needs and concerns.
  • Provide constructive feedback through effective coaching and recognition of achievements.
  • Utilize strong culinary expertise to educate staff on equipment and cooking techniques.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution among team members in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate with Team Leads and Certified Trainers to uphold operational standards.
  • Ensure that training materials are current and effectively utilized during staff training.
  • Analyze staffing requirements for effective workforce planning.
  • Act as a liaison between the culinary team and management.
  • Create individualized work plans for team members for each shift.

Food Production

  • Ensure all food is prepared according to recipes and served at optimal temperatures and presentation.
  • Manage inventory effectively to maintain quality while minimizing costs.
  • Adhere to NYC Health Department standards consistently.
  • Conduct regular quality checks on food preparation.
  • Organize and manage food handling and cleaning procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Address community feedback with urgency and professionalism.
  • Prioritize guest satisfaction through exemplary service and follow-through.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of three years of experience in large volume food preparation, with at least two years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Organizational skills to manage tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to maintain composure during challenging situations.
  • Completion of a Culinary training program or degree from a Culinary Arts institution.
  • Possession of a valid NYC DOH Food Protection Certificate.
  • Familiarity with CACFP guidelines.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Willingness to adapt to various climatic conditions.
