Overall Purpose

The role of the Educational Support Specialist is designed to foster a well-structured and efficient learning atmosphere where students from Pre-K through K12 can fully engage with educational programs and utilize available resources. Educational Support Specialists may be assigned to assist in classrooms, administrative offices, media centers, or work with students individually or in groups, depending on the requirements of classroom educators.

Essential Functions


• Administers assessments and diagnostic tests as instructed by the teacher (including math and reading evaluations) to support the instructional process.


• Aids students, either individually or in small groups, with lesson tasks and training to achieve daily objectives (such as listening to students read, providing writing support, assisting with educational software, and personal care) to reinforce learning concepts and help students meet academic goals and social standards.


• Implements independent study, enrichment activities, remedial tasks, and personal hygiene routines (including toileting, dressing, and self-feeding) to reinforce educational concepts.


• Maintains classroom tools, supplies, and learning materials (such as computers and art supplies) to ensure availability and a safe learning environment.


• Monitors individual and groups of students in various settings (classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, restrooms, and during transportation) to provide a secure and positive learning experience.


• Reports observations and incidents concerning specific students (such as accidents, conflicts, inappropriate behavior, and safety issues) to communicate relevant information to instructional and administrative staff.


• Responds to emergencies (such as injuries or conflicts) to address immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.


• Supports classroom educators (through storytelling, reading, drill exercises, one-on-one assistance, and participation in lunchroom activities) to aid in the effective implementation of appropriate behavior, curriculum, and teaching strategies.

• Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the educational unit.

Competencies


• Skills-based Competencies: Required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally enhance skills to adapt to changing job conditions. Specific skills required include operating standard office equipment and relevant software applications, maintaining accurate records, adhering to safety protocols, administering first aid and/or prescribed medications, applying physical restraint techniques, and promoting activities and events.


• Knowledge-based Competencies: Required to perform basic mathematics, including calculations with fractions, percentages, and ratios; read various manuals, write documents following established formats, and present information effectively; and comprehend complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required includes grammar and punctuation concepts, stages of child development and learning styles, age-appropriate activities and behaviors, classroom instructional media and technology, cultural differences among students, health standards and hazards, and relevant codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies.


• Ability-based Competencies: Required to schedule activities, gather and collate data, and utilize job-related equipment. Flexibility is necessary to collaborate with others, work with data using defined but varied processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. The ability to work with a diverse range of individuals, manage various data, and use a variety of job-related equipment is essential. Problem-solving skills are necessary to identify issues and develop action plans. Specific abilities required include effective communication with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, collaborating as part of a team, adapting to changing work priorities, and managing frequent interruptions.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

At least 21 years of age (Individuals with a minimum number of credit hours and an Associate Degree or higher teaching credential may be exempt from the age requirement). Paraprofessional license or successful completion of the paraprofessional assessment.

Physical Requirements

The typical methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine motor dexterity.

Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.

Continuing Education/Training

Maintains all necessary licenses and certifications.
