Overall Purpose

The role of the Educational Support Specialist is designed to create a well-structured and efficiently operating educational environment where students from Pre-K through K12 can fully engage with instructional programs and utilize available resources. Key Responsibilities


• Administers assessments and diagnostic tests as directed by the educator (such as math and reading evaluations) to support the instructional process.


• Assists students, either individually or in small groups, with lesson tasks and daily activities (including reading support, writing assistance, and help with educational software) to reinforce learning concepts and help students achieve academic objectives and social skills.


• Implements independent study, enrichment activities, remedial work, and daily personal hygiene routines (such as toileting, dressing, and self-feeding) to reinforce educational concepts.


• Maintains classroom resources, supplies, and learning tools (like computers and art materials) to ensure availability and safety within the learning environment.


• Monitors individual and groups of students across various settings (classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, restrooms, and during transportation) to provide a secure and positive educational atmosphere.


• Reports observations and incidents concerning specific students (such as accidents, conflicts, inappropriate behavior, and safety issues) to communicate relevant information to instructional and administrative staff.


• Responds to emergency situations (such as injuries or conflicts) to address immediate safety concerns and direct students to appropriate personnel for resolution.


• Supports classroom educators (through storytelling, reading activities, practice drills, one-on-one assistance, and participation in adaptive physical education routines) to facilitate effective teaching methodologies.

• Performs other related tasks as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the educational unit.

Required Competencies


• Skills-based Competencies: Ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt skills to meet evolving job conditions. Required skills include operating standard office equipment and relevant software, maintaining accurate records, adhering to safety protocols, administering first aid, and promoting school activities.


• Knowledge-based Competencies: Proficiency in basic math, reading various manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, and understanding complex instructions. Knowledge required includes grammar, child development stages, age-appropriate activities, instructional media, cultural differences, health standards, and safety practices.


• Ability-based Competencies: Capable of scheduling activities, gathering data, and utilizing job-related equipment. Flexibility is essential for collaboration, data management, and equipment operation. Specific abilities include effective communication with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, teamwork, and adapting to changing work conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent

At least 21 years of age (Individuals with an Associate Degree or higher teaching credential may be exempt from the age requirement) Paraprofessional license or successful completion of the paraprofessional assessment.

Physical Demands

The typical demands of this role include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and significant fine motor skills.

Generally, the job requires approximately 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.

Continuing Education/Training

Responsible for maintaining all necessary licenses and certifications.
