Overall Purpose
The role of the Educational Support Specialist is designed to ensure a well-structured and efficiently operating educational atmosphere where students from Pre-K through K12 can fully engage with instructional programs and utilize available resources. Educational Support Specialists may be tasked with responsibilities in classrooms, administrative offices, media centers, working with students individually or in groups, or in various contexts based on the needs of classroom educators.

Key Responsibilities
• Administers assessments and diagnostic tests as instructed by the teacher (including math and reading evaluations) to assist educators in the instructional process.
• Aids students, either individually or in small groups, with lesson tasks and guidance for completing daily activities (such as listening to students read, providing writing support, assisting with educational software, and personal care tasks) to reinforce learning concepts and help students achieve academic objectives and social skills.
• Facilitates independent study, enrichment activities, remedial work, and daily personal hygiene routines (toileting, dressing, teeth brushing, self-feeding, etc.) to present and reinforce educational concepts.
• Maintains classroom tools, supplies, and educational materials (including computers and art supplies) to ensure availability and safety in the learning environment.
• Supervises individual and groups of students in various settings (classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, restrooms, bus loading/unloading, etc.) to provide a secure and supportive educational atmosphere.
• Reports observations and incidents concerning specific students (such as accidents, conflicts, inappropriate behavior, safety issues, etc.) to communicate essential information to relevant instructional and administrative staff.
• Responds to emergency situations (injured student, conflicts, etc.) to address immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Assists classroom teachers (through storytelling, reading, practice drills, one-on-one support, helping in the lunchroom, adaptive physical education routines, etc.) to aid in the implementation of effective behavior management, curriculum, and teaching strategies.
Additional Responsibilities
• Performs other related tasks as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the educational unit.
Required Competencies
• Skills-based Competencies: Ability to perform multiple tasks and occasionally enhance skills to adapt to changing job conditions. Essential skills include operating standard office equipment and relevant software applications, maintaining accurate records, adhering to safety protocols, administering first aid and/or prescribed medications, applying physical restraint methods, and promoting events.
• Knowledge-based Competencies: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, read various manuals, write documents following established formats, and present information effectively. Specific knowledge required includes grammar and punctuation, child development stages and learning styles, age-appropriate activities, classroom instructional media and technology, cultural diversity, health standards, job-related regulations, and instructional methods.
• Ability-based Competencies: Required to schedule activities, gather and organize data, and utilize job-related equipment. Flexibility is essential for collaboration, data management, and equipment operation. Specific abilities include effective communication with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, prioritizing tasks, teamwork, adapting to changing priorities, and managing interruptions.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Minimum age of 21 years (Individuals with a minimum number of credit hours and an Associate Degree or higher teaching credential may be exempt from the age requirement) Paraprofessional license or successful completion of the paraprofessional assessment.
Physical Demands
The typical methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, along with significant fine motor skills.
Generally, the role requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.
Continuing Education/Training
Responsible for maintaining all licenses and certifications.
