Police Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer to join our team at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities- Law Enforcement and Public Safety
- Exercise police powers to detect and apprehend law violators, investigate crimes, accidents, and complaints.
- Patrol university property, including hospitals, to protect persons and property, and report any incidents for appropriate action.
- Community Policing and Engagement
- Create a sense of safety and security within the university community by providing courteous and ethical service.
- Aid and assist individuals in danger or victims of crime, accidents, or illness.
- Traffic Control and Enforcement
- Assist in maintaining traffic control on university property and enforce state and university laws, rules, and regulations regarding traffic and parking.
- Investigations and Reporting
- Conduct investigations and submit accurate reports related to the enforcement of state, local, and university laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Special Events and Escort Services
- Maintain order at special events on university property.
- Provide escort services as required.
- Evidence Handling and Custody
- Secure and properly record all evidence or other property coming into their custody.
- Prisoner Transport and Processing
- Ensure safe transportation and processing of prisoners in accordance with divisional policies and procedures.
- First Aid and Emergency Response
- Provide emergency first aid and call for professional assistance as required.
- Transport sick or injured individuals to the hospital or medical facility when necessary.
- Professional Development and Community Involvement
- Demonstrate and acquire specialized law enforcement skills.
- Participate in community crime prevention programs, departmental outreach programs, and serve on university committees and specialized programs.
- Education and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Non-academy applicants must be eligible to enter and successfully complete a Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee-approved full-time municipal police academy.
- License and Certification
- Ability to obtain a Class A License to carry a firearm in Massachusetts and certification in firearms proficiency within 6 months of hire.
- Certification in First Aid & CPR as required under M.G.L. Chap. 111 s. 201.
- Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of state laws, university, and department rules and regulations.
- Specialized law enforcement skills and certification in various aspects of law enforcement.
- Considerable knowledge of laws of arrest, search, and seizure.
- Working knowledge of police procedures and practices, fire prevention methods.
- Knowledge of criminal court procedures.
- Personal Qualities
- Ability to maintain good order and acceptable personal demeanor under periods of stress, verbal and physical abuse, danger, and emotional tension.
- Ability to deal effectively with all members of the university community and with the public.
- Ability to plan and supervise work of subordinates.
- Ability to maintain good order among subordinates and good personal demeanor under stress.
- Ability to give and carry out oral and written orders and instructions.
