Reports to: Food Service Manager

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Compensation: Starting Wage $21/hourly

Work Schedule:
Typical Schedule Monday-Friday 6:00 am - 2:00 pm, with occasional weekend duties.

Established in 1910, our extensive programs begin with early intervention at the elementary level, bridge the learning gap for middle school students, and empower high schoolers to thrive and plan for bright futures.

Throughout the academic year, Camp Fire collaborates with numerous schools in the Metro Area. During the summer, we provide enriching summer camps in the Portland metro area and at our scenic 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, nestled by the vibrant Sandy River and surrounded by majestic trees.

Our initiatives directly impact over 3,000 youth aged 5-18 annually across an eight-county region, including the greater Portland metro area.


Position Overview:

This role is essential in supporting the Food Service Manager with menu planning, food procurement within budgetary constraints, managing kitchen inventory, and overseeing kitchen staff and volunteers during summer camp, outdoor school, and catered events.

Additionally, this position ensures that the dietary needs and restrictions of campers and renters are met safely in collaboration with the Camp Director and Camp Rentals Manager.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Foster an inclusive and equitable environment by engaging respectfully with campers, families, visitors, vendors, and staff, recognizing the diverse qualities that each individual brings.
  • Oversee daily kitchen operations, including supervision of kitchen personnel, menu execution, dietary management, sanitation, inventory control, and compliance with Oregon Food Sanitation regulations.
  • Serve as a backup for the Food Service Manager during their absence.

Job Duties:
  • Exhibit strong communication skills, including the ability to present, persuade, and negotiate effectively with coworkers, volunteers, families, and contractors, while maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Ensure proper inventory management and timely use of kitchen supplies.
  • Supervise and actively participate in preparing nutritious meals for youth, staff, and guests during summer programming and rental seasons.
  • Provide quality meal options for individuals with special dietary requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in kitchen and food service areas.
  • Monitor food preparation techniques, portion sizes, and overall food presentation.
  • Adhere to health and food safety standards and regulations.
  • Train camp staff on their responsibilities in dining areas, including safety protocols and specific procedures.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and reliability in attendance.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment, fostering a spirit of cooperation.
  • Follow directives from supervisors respectfully.
  • Support the mission and values of Camp Fire, presenting a positive image of the organization.
  • Comply with all safety guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties within the food department as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises Kitchen Assistants and Dishwashers, carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and the Kitchen Manager's directives. Responsibilities include training staff.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

This position requires a valid Oregon Food Handler's card, ServSafe Management certification, and First Aid & CPR certification.
