Berkeley, California, United States Sonera Full time
Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and practical researcher or engineer with extensive knowledge in materials science to contribute to our sensor innovation initiatives. The role will emphasize the deposition, analysis, and continuous enhancement of magnetic materials and configurations utilized in our systems, applicable to both uncoated substrates and functional sensor devices.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in sputter deposition and advanced analysis of magnetic thin films across both DC and RF frequencies, along with a solid technical grasp of magnetism, magnetoelectric materials, and magnetization dynamics. Collaboration with other members of the materials and engineering teams will be essential to achieve project goals and advance Sonera's biomagnetic sensing platform.

This individual should be prepared to assume project management duties and exhibit creativity in problem-solving within a dynamic startup atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize in-house sputter deposition equipment to apply thin-film materials and configurations on diverse substrates and devices.
  • Evaluate and characterize high-frequency (RF) electrical and magnetic characteristics of sputtered thin films and patterned devices using both standard and custom measurement systems.
  • Develop statistical models to link device performance with materials design and processing, facilitating iterative optimization.
  • Formulate and implement team strategies to validate device performance, aiming to meet established performance benchmarks for Sonera's sensors.
  • Conduct materials design assessments and provide technical assistance to team members, proactively identifying and addressing technical challenges.
  • Oversee the materials product development lifecycle, including design, fabrication, testing, review, and optimization.

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with physical vapor deposition techniques for metals, oxides, magnetic, and dielectric materials.
  • Proficiency in optimizing film stacks, including deposition parameters, thicknesses, compositions, and material selection.
  • Familiarity with electrical and magnetic characterization methodologies and tools.
  • Experience in analyzing processing-structure-property relationships and optimizing film stacks iteratively.
  • Proficient in coding, scripting, and data analysis software.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, along with effective multitasking and time management skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with over 3 years of industry experience in materials processing, optimization, and product development.
  • Extensive experience in sputter deposition of thin-film magnetic materials and stacks, integrating deposited materials with devices, and optimizing overall system performance.
  • In-depth knowledge of magnetic thin film device physics and characterization, such as magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) or magnetic random access memory (MRAM).
  • Broad experience with various materials characterization tools (e.g., XRD, SEM, XPS) and both static and high-frequency magnetic characterization techniques.
  • Strong understanding of engineering data analysis, including inferential statistics, design of experiments (DOE), and regression analysis, as well as statistical software (e.g., JMP, Minitab).
  • Solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience with magnetic and multiferroic materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Benefits:

Compensation includes participation in Sonera's Equity Incentive Plan, a 401(k) plan with generous company matching, comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance, a flexible time-off policy, and paid parental leave.
