Key Responsibilities:
Provide technical support and assist nursing staff and physicians in delivering patient care during surgical procedures.

Adhere to established performance standards and align with the philosophy and objectives of the nursing department.
Demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide care to various age groups. Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Ensure compliance with established standards and maintain departmental, unit, and hospital policies, including:
Quality assurance, safety protocols, and infection control measures. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for patients and staff. Regularly clean, dust, and organize storage areas and equipment.
Collaborate effectively with team members to achieve departmental goals. Uphold patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.

Participate in required meetings, in-services, educational programs, and continuing education to stay updated on current practices and demonstrate proficiency in procedures.

Prepare and set up operating rooms with all necessary instruments and supplies in accordance with departmental policies and surgeon preferences. Update and maintain surgeon-specific preference cards. Observe aseptic techniques and assist with surgical procedures. Clean, decontaminate, wrap, and sterilize instruments and equipment. Perform pre-operative preparations as needed. Assist in patient transportation and support the scrub or circulating nurse as directed.
Drape patients, prepare operative sites with antiseptics, and hold retractors as requested.
Perform suturing, utilize electrocautery, and execute suturing techniques. Conduct basic clamping, retracting, and suctioning tasks. Explain and demonstrate techniques and methods used in the operating room to new staff members.
Maintain inventory, preserve and label operative specimens, and transport samples to the laboratory for analysis.
Assist colleagues in maintaining cleanliness in surgical rooms post-operation (e.g., emptying waste bags, managing soiled linens, etc.). Ensure supplies and equipment are organized and that all unused items are stored properly.

Collaborate with the perioperative team to deliver comprehensive care and possess operating knowledge of equipment and instruments required for all surgical procedures.

Demonstrate competency across all specialty areas and rotate through various services regularly.
Assist OR R.N.s in coordinating supplies and/or equipment operation off the field.
Keep supplies and equipment organized, maintain adequate stock in operating rooms and supply areas, and ensure proper operation of equipment, notifying supervisors of any repairs needed.

Essential Functions:
Possess strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective communication with physicians, staff, and patients.
Ability to walk regularly and stand for extended periods.
Capability to lift and move patients and perform repetitive physical tasks.

Working Environment:
Work is conducted in a surgical suite; potential exposure to patient illnesses, communicable diseases, blood hazards, and hazardous chemicals.

Orientation Requirements:
Attendance at new employee and departmental orientations is mandatory.

Licensure / Certification / Registration Requirements:

Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within 6 months of hire or job transfer date.

Certified Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred.

Education:

Completion of a recognized scrub technician college program preferred or a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Surgical Technician, or at least one (1) year of experience as a Certified Surgical Technician.
