Job Overview

WHO WE'RE SEEKING
The Public Safety Officer is accountable to the Security Manager. This role is essential for delivering comprehensive law enforcement services and mandates that the individual holds a valid Law Enforcement Officer license with the Austin Police Department.

Key Responsibilities

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
The following duties outline the general responsibilities of this position and are not exhaustive in nature.

• Conduct regular patrols of designated areas using various modes of transportation. Respond promptly to emergencies and provide necessary medical assistance. Manage and redirect traffic during incidents or disturbances. Investigate unusual occurrences, traffic incidents, or public complaints. Issue citations as required.

• Ensure the safety and security of transit facilities.

• Document findings related to investigations, offenses, arrests, and daily activities. Prepare legal documents and manage detainees. Interrogate suspects as necessary.

• Engage with the public to provide assistance and information.

• Provide testimony in legal proceedings.

• Manage and disperse large crowds when necessary.

• Conduct surveillance of commercial properties or individuals.

• Establish tactical positions and coordinate emergency responses for specialized operations.

• Utilize data terminals and maintain communication via radio, monitoring all transmissions.

• Identify and report issues, facilitating effective solutions.

• Uphold federal, state, and local regulations.

• Contribute to the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Safety Management Systems (SMS) by adhering to safety protocols and reporting any security concerns.

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION
This role is classified as safety-sensitive. Employees in this position must participate in the Employer's substance testing program, which is a condition of employment with Capital Metro. Random testing for prohibited substances or alcohol misuse will occur during safety-sensitive functions.

Qualifications

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

• Minimum of one (1) year of active service as a Police Officer with the Austin (TX) Police Department.

• Currently employed by the Austin Police Department under an agreement with Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CMTA) to provide law enforcement services.

• Compliance with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) licensing requirements.

• Possession of a valid Class C Driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Understanding of criminal law, investigative procedures, statutes, ordinances, and crime prevention strategies.

• Familiarity with departmental policies, procedures, and regulations, including FCC guidelines for radio communication.

• Knowledge of safe practices in firearm handling.

• Proficiency in oral and written communication.

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

• Competence in using computers and relevant software.

• Analytical skills for data interpretation and problem-solving.

• Capability to operate motor vehicles safely.

• Proficiency in using two-way radio equipment.

• Ability to apply knowledge of criminal law and investigation techniques.

• Quick recognition and analysis of irregular events.

• Ability to administer first aid and CPR.

• Capacity to operate vehicles under emergency conditions.

• Legible writing and reading skills.

• Physical endurance and agility to meet job requirements.

• Ability to train and mentor others.

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with city employees and the public.
