Patient Financial Advocate

The Patient Financial Advocate plays a vital role in ensuring patients receive fair and transparent financial care. This role involves conducting thorough financial interviews with patients, reviewing hospital charges, and verifying insurance coverage. The advocate must be able to communicate complex financial information in a clear and compassionate manner, while also representing the hospital's interests.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct patient financial interviews to determine eligibility for financial assistance programs
• Verify insurance coverage and calculate co-pays and deductibles
• Identify additional assistance patients may be eligible for, such as Medicare and Medicaid
• Determine eligibility for reduced fees or free services under federal or state medical assistance programs
• Collect applicable fees from patients
• Develop and maintain solid working relationships with hospital departments and insurance agencies
• Possess strong interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and linguistic skills to effectively interact with patients and families
Requirements:
• High school degree and at least three years of related experience
• Business school or professional medical office experience preferred
• Training or experience in insurance, registration, medical billing, financial counseling, bilingual, or hospital work preferred
• HIPAA and EMTALA knowledge and understanding is critical to this role
• Medical terminology, computer skills, excellent communication skills, and knowledge of third-party billing are essential
• Ability to multitask in a busy environment and maintain a calm demeanor when interacting with patients and families
