Position Overview:
Nurse/RN

SUMMARY:
Implement health services programs that effectively address the needs of the student body within the designated campus. Deliver health services to students while promoting health education and preventive practices.

Key Responsibilities:

Nursing Services:
  • Deliver direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established health protocols. Provide health counseling and instruction tailored to individual students.
  • Evaluate student health issues, communicate with parents, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow-ups as necessary. Act as a liaison among school staff, families, healthcare professionals, and the community.
  • Inform parents of any accidents or illnesses and secure emergency medical assistance for students when required.
  • Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and assess the outcomes of nursing care for medically fragile students to ensure their safe integration into the school environment.
  • Advocate for student health needs.
  • Administer medications to students in accordance with district policies and procedures.
  • Establish and execute effective procedures for mandatory health screenings.

Instruction:
  • Contribute to the development of campus health education curriculum, provide training to faculty and staff on health-related topics, and deliver health education to individuals and groups, including communication with parents and the local community regarding health issues.

Consultation:
  • Collaborate closely with campus leadership and staff to ensure a healthy school environment, addressing the health needs of the general student population and those with specific health conditions.
  • Participate in meetings regarding students with identified health needs and assist in developing Individual Health Plans (IHPs). Work with district personnel to implement IEP goals and services.
  • Advise campus administration during crisis situations and assist in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Administration:
  • Work with the Director of Health Services to evaluate and coordinate the campus health program, making adjustments based on findings. Develop and recommend policies to promote student and staff health and wellness.
  • Supervise and train LVNs responsible for assisting students with health needs.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records, including immunization and treatment records.
  • Order necessary supplies and equipment to sustain clinic operations.
  • Adhere to policies established by federal and state laws, as well as district regulations.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to campus leadership.
  • Follow established safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Professional Development:
  • Engage in staff development activities to enhance job-related skills.
  • Maintain professional nursing knowledge and skills as required by state regulations, including certification for mandated screenings and CPR/AED.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and serve on committees as needed.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Ensure confidentiality of student information.
  • Develop systems for information retrieval to support all programs; maintain all required reports and records.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities aligned with district goals and current research.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Educators.
  • Follow established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Valid RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Current AED and CPR certifications.
  • Certification by the Texas Department of Health for vision and hearing screenings.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience:
  • Two years of successful nursing experience outside of an independent living environment.
  • Community health experience preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of health assessments to identify student health issues.
  • Ability to provide direct care using professional assessment skills and established health protocols.
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures effectively.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid.
  • Proficient in keyboarding and record maintenance.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • None.

MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Standard medical clinic equipment usage; personal computer and instructional equipment.
  • Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent bending, kneeling, and walking.
  • Frequent light lifting; may require heavy lifting and assisting students with physical disabilities.
  • Exposure to biological hazards and communicable diseases; regular noise exposure.
  • Work to be performed on-site; no remote work available.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions.
