Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse to join our team at WNY Independent Living Inc. as a Peer Support Specialist. In this role, you will work closely with our peer team to provide services that support individuals in crisis, promoting their recovery and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide person-centered, peer-driven services that align with the values and mission of the Mental Health Peer Connection and the Renewal Center.
  • Conduct risk assessments to determine the appropriateness of diversion services and engage guests in a meaningful way.
  • Collaborate with the peer specialist team to decide whether an emergency department assessment or ambulance is recommended.
  • Keep abreast of best practices and community resources related to health and wellness, medications, and side effects.
  • Document all consumer activity within two working days of service provision.
  • Work with guests to identify alternative resources and services as needed.
  • Attend agency in-service training and staff meetings as required.

Requirements:

  • Valid certification as a Registered Nurse.
  • Successful completion of online Relias training as assigned by supervisor.
  • Completion of Academy of Peer Services Peer Specialist Training within six months of employment.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Knowledge of customer-operated and peer recovery programs.
  • Ability to employ principles of recovery.
  • Working knowledge of the mental health and physical health service delivery system.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to administer and interpret risk assessments and triage appropriately.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment regarding medical and mental health interventions.
  • Ability to assertively advocate for individuals and negotiate with service providers.
  • Ability to establish trusting supportive relationships with guests.
