Position Overview:
The Department of English at UCLA is recognized nationally for its excellence.

The department is committed to traditional studies while also fostering innovative research and teaching in interdisciplinary literary studies.

Under the supervision of the Senior Undergraduate Advisor and Senior Graduate Advisor, the role involves serving as an advisor for both undergraduate and graduate students within the English Department.

This position entails coordinating, planning, developing, implementing, and refining policies and procedures to ensure the effective operation of advising services, scheduling, enrollment, and special programs.

The incumbent will be a vital member of the department's staff, participating in campus-wide committees, exercising a high degree of autonomy in significant program areas, and stepping in for fellow Student Services Advisors when necessary.

Collaboration with faculty, administrators, staff, teaching assistants, and students at all levels is essential.

Key responsibilities include academic advising, development and management of special programs and services, consultation with faculty and administrators, and public relations.

Incumbents are acknowledged for their advanced specialization and leadership capabilities.

Required Qualifications:


Ability to deliver well-structured and grammatically accurate oral and written communication that reflects knowledge and professionalism regarding graduate and undergraduate programs.

Demonstrated proficiency in applying fundamental advising techniques with the sensitivity needed to assist students in resolving issues or setting academic goals; skill in showing empathy and genuine concern for student challenges; perceptive listening and awareness.

Capability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with leadership, students, staff, faculty, administrators, both within UCLA and with external institutions, as well as the public to achieve the objectives of the advising offices.

Skill in creating procedures to quickly and accurately assess individual student progress.

Ability to interpret university transcripts, compute GPAs accurately and efficiently, and prepare and distribute admissions files to the Admissions Committee.

Exceptional ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision, as well as collaborate effectively with colleagues.

Ability to function in an environment with frequent interruptions while remaining approachable and supportive. (Required)

Knowledge of confidentiality policies and the ability to manage sensitive matters appropriately.

Exceptional skill in interacting with individuals from diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds for the purpose of advising students and collaborating with faculty, staff, and graduate students.

Proficiency in utilizing computer technology and campus software applications such as OASIS, MyUCLA, DARS, Counselor Desktop, CIMS, Slate to perform job functions, including scheduling, database management, word processing, spreadsheets, and Google applications, Zoom, Slack.

Ability to deliver oral group presentations to provide information about academic programs. (Required)

Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, bridging two advising offices. (Required)


General knowledge of and ability to assist in clarifying the policies and procedures of graduate admissions to current and prospective students, faculty, and the public.

Familiarity with student services such as the Career Center, Division of Graduate Education, AAP, Counseling and Psychological Services, Teaching and Learning Center, etc.

Experience in editing web pages, including knowledge of HTML code and web editing software. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:
A Bachelor's Degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training (Required)
