Position Summary


The Sustainability Compliance Officer plays a crucial role in developing and updating chemical health and safety standards that are implemented across the University. This position also involves conducting thorough inspections of all work environments to ensure adherence to federal safety regulations.

This role includes the coordination of safety training, environmental initiatives, and stewardship programs for the University community.

As a Chemical Hygiene Officer, the individual will lead efforts to enhance laboratory safety, improve environmental performance, manage risk, and ensure compliance throughout the institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Collaborate with university departments to align program requirements and enforce relevant safety policies and practices.

2. Guarantee compliance with all applicable federal and state environmental, health, and safety laws.

3. Maintain comprehensive records of safety training, inspection findings, and compliance documentation regarding chemical storage and disposal.

4. Provide guidance to departments on selecting suitable personal protective equipment for specific work environments.

5. Conduct inspections of laboratories and storage facilities to ensure proper organization and chemical management.

6. Oversee the inspection of life safety equipment and ensure that necessary testing and maintenance are conducted.

7. Communicate all environmental safety policies and procedures to the University community, including the development and upkeep of the environmental safety website.

8. Perform additional related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications


A Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, or a related discipline, along with two years of experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting.

Chemical Hygiene training is required.

Experience in an academic or research environment is preferred.

Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and DEQ regulations is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Ability to collaborate effectively across various departments and academic units.

- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

- Proven capability to respond appropriately to emergencies and critical situations.

- Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of reports and safety manuals.

- Proficiency in creating and utilizing documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

- Ability to develop and update web pages using Cascade.

Physical Requirements

This position may require the lifting of light objects (1 to 10 pounds) without repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally, the lifting of average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) may be necessary.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to challenging conditions or variations, such as those found in diverse weather situations or light industrial environments.

Salary/Pay Information

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Anticipated Schedule

Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
