About Duke University Hospital

Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, North Carolina, is recognized as one of the premier healthcare facilities in the nation. With a capacity of 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms, we offer a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center.

Position Highlights

The Cardiothoracic Unit at Duke University Hospital is seeking skilled Surgical Technologists to join our interdisciplinary team. Our unit is equipped with 57 operating rooms and a diverse team of healthcare professionals, including surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia technicians. We specialize in a variety of procedures, including:

  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
  • Valve Surgeries
  • Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
  • Aortic Aneurysm Repairs
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Pediatric Congenital Surgeries
  • Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS)
  • Esophagogastrectomy
  • Nissen Fundoplication

Our team is also responsible for managing pediatric and adult ECMO cases throughout the hospital, ensuring the highest standards of care for our patients.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical Technologists are essential members of the surgical team, responsible for preparing and caring for patients undergoing surgery. This includes:

  • Maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring all instruments are prepared for use.
  • Assisting in the setup of the operating room with necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Performing accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure patient safety.
  • Providing support in both operating room and ambulatory settings, demonstrating proficiency in preoperative and postoperative care.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must have:

  • A degree from an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent military training.
  • Entry-level experience for Level I positions, with a minimum of 6 months for Level II.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
